What it is used for

This palette is designed to simulate dermal injuries realistically. The four shades cover the full spectrum of a burn: from initial redness to deep charring, including the purple tones characteristic of inflammation and tissue damage. It is equally suitable for audiovisual production, theatre, live special effects and competition makeup.

  • Simulation of first, second and third degree burns
  • Recreation of blisters and skin inflammation
  • Charring and superficial necrosis effects
  • Wound gradients for horror or post-apocalyptic characters
  • Character makeup for theatre and stage
  • Special effects for film shoots and audiovisual productions
  • Cosplay makeup with wounds and injuries

How to use it

  1. Prepare the skin or latex prosthetic by thoroughly cleaning and drying the surface before applying any product.
  2. Start with the Burnt Coral shade on the least affected areas: it is the base colour that simulates the initial redness of a mild burn.
  3. Apply with a sponge or synthetic brush using stippling motions to build opacity gradually.
  4. Work in Fire Red on areas of greater intensity and Medium Plum to add depth to cracks and irregularities.
  5. Use Charcoal Blue on the most damaged points to create the charring effect. Apply it precisely using a fine-tip brush.
  6. Blend the edges between colours with gentle circular motions to integrate the shades naturally.
  7. If you need a more translucent finish, mix the creams on a palette with moisturiser or a few drops of isopropyl alcohol.
  8. Set the result with setting powder to ensure the durability of the effect during the performance or shoot.
  9. To seal and increase resistance to sweat and rubbing, apply a liquid sealer over the makeup once it has been set with powder.

Usage tips

Build the wound in layers

Do not apply all the colour at once. Work in thin layers, allowing each one to settle before adding the next. This gives you greater control over intensity and makes the final result more convincing and three-dimensional.

Mix the shades to customise the effect

The four colours in the palette are designed to be combined with each other. Use a spatula and a mixing palette to create intermediate shades tailored to the actor's skin tone or the character's requirements. Small variations in the proportion of Plum or Coral make a notable difference to the result.

Always set before sealing

First apply translucent setting powder to dry the cream and prevent it from running. Only then apply the liquid sealer. If you reverse the order, the sealer can trap moisture and alter the finish. This step is especially important for effects that will be exposed to the heat of stage lighting.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be applied directly onto latex prosthetics?

Yes. The Pro Burns & Blisters Wheel is formulated to adhere to both skin and latex. Make sure the prosthetic is properly adhered and dry before applying colour, and set the makeup with powder to prevent transfer.

How long does the effect last without touching it up?

With proper setting — translucent powder and liquid sealer on top — the effect holds for several hours under normal stage conditions. In very hot environments or with heavy sweating, a spot touch-up on the most exposed areas may be necessary.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

Ben Nye's cream formula is widely used in professional productions, but if the actor has sensitive skin or a history of allergies, it is always advisable to do a patch test on a small area before extending the application.

Can it be used over body paint or a makeup base?

Yes, you can apply it over a cream or water-based makeup foundation as long as it is properly set with powder. Applying it over wet or greasy surfaces can hinder adhesion and colour control.

How is the product removed?

Remove the cream colours with a moistened cotton pad. Wash away any remaining residue with water and mild soap or a facial cleansing wipe. If you have applied sealer on top, you will need a specific sealer remover before cleaning off the cream.

Can this palette be used for effects other than burns?

The shades in the Pro Burns & Blisters Wheel are also useful for recreating advanced bruises, infected wounds or injuries in advanced stages of scarring, thanks to the reddish, purple and bluish tones in the palette.

What tools are most recommended for application?

For larger areas, a makeup sponge or a flat synthetic brush work well. For fine details such as cracks or charring edges, a fine-tip brush allows greater precision. For blending, a spatula and a mixing palette are essential.

How many applications does the palette yield?

The complete 28 g wheel offers between 20 and 50 applications per shade, depending on the intensity of the effect and the size of the treated area. For localised facial effects, the yield tends towards the upper end of that range.
