What it is used for
This black spray primer is the fastest and most effective solution for preparing any surface before painting. The black base is particularly valued by modellers because it enhances the depth of dark colours and makes natural shading easier in hard-to-reach areas. Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain, recommends it for a wide variety of applications:
- Priming scale plastic models: military vehicles, aircraft, ships, and figures
- Preparing metal or resin miniatures for wargames (Warhammer and similar)
- Black base for miniature painting techniques that work from black up to highlights
- Priming large pieces in dioramas and scenery
- Preparing cosplay parts made from plastic, foam, or metal
- Base for metallic effects and zenithal priming on SFX figures
- Uniform coverage of surfaces with complex geometry or high levels of detail
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Clean the piece of dust, grease, or mould release residue. On metal, degrease with alcohol or an appropriate solvent. On plastic, washing with soap and water is sufficient.
- Shaking the can: Shake the spray for at least one minute before use, until you can hear the inner ball mixing the contents evenly.
- Nozzle selection: Fit the fine nozzle for surfaces with a lot of detail or small miniatures. Use the standard nozzle for larger surfaces.
- Application: Apply in thin coats at a distance of between 20 and 30 cm. Use short, overlapping passes to avoid build-up. Two thin coats are always better than one thick one.
- Drying: The synthetic lacquer cures quickly. Wait until the first coat is dry to the touch before applying the second. Allow to cure completely before painting over it.
- Cleaning: When finished, invert the can and press the nozzle for a few seconds to purge any remaining paint and prevent the nozzle from clogging.
Usage tips
Temperature and application conditions
Always apply in a well-ventilated space at a temperature between 15 and 25 °C. In cold conditions, the lacquer may develop a grainy "frosting" effect; in excessive heat, drying happens too quickly and can cause irregularities. Avoid applying in high humidity.
Thin coats to preserve detail
On highly detailed miniatures, it is preferable to apply several very thin coats rather than a single thick one. Thick coats fill in the recesses and erase sculpted detail. The fine nozzle included with the can is designed precisely for this type of work.
Black base for advanced techniques
The Black base is the ideal starting point for the zenithal priming technique: once dry, apply a light or white primer from above to create a natural guide for lights and shadows. It is also the recommended base before using AK Interactive Xtreme Metal paints, which need a dark background to reach their maximum metallic luminosity.
Frequently asked questions
Can you paint over it with water-based acrylic paints?
Yes. The Fine Primer Black AK1009 is formulated to be fully compatible with acrylic paints. Once cured, it accepts any acrylic paint from the AK Interactive range without any issues, as well as enamels and extreme weathering products.
Does it work on resin and foam, as well as plastic and metal?
AK Interactive specifies compatibility on plastic and metal. For resin pieces, results are generally very good as long as they are thoroughly clean and degreased. On foam, it is recommended to test on a non-visible area first, as some propellants may affect porous or low-density materials.
How long should you wait between priming and applying a paint coat?
Being a fast-curing synthetic lacquer, the Fine Primer Black AK1009 is usually dry to the touch within a few minutes under normal conditions. However, for a complete cure that guarantees maximum adhesion of subsequent coats, it is advisable to wait between 30 minutes and one hour before starting to paint.
What are the two nozzles included with the can for?
The AK1009 can includes a standard nozzle, suitable for large surfaces and general applications, and a fine nozzle, designed for miniatures, figures with a lot of detail, or any piece where controlling the volume of paint and preserving raised detail is important.
Can I use this primer as a base for metallic effects?
Yes, and it is one of its most recommended uses. The Black colour is the ideal base for AK Interactive metallic paints, as the dark background intensifies the shine and depth of metallic effects. It is especially useful before applying paints from the Xtreme Metal range.
