AK11218 Orange belongs to the Clear range by AK Interactive, a series of acrylics formulated to add colour while preserving the transparency of the surface. Unlike a standard opaque paint, this transparent acrylic lets you tint translucent parts — windows, headlights, canopies, lenses — without hiding their glassy appearance. It also works as a glaze over already painted surfaces or to shift the tone of metallic parts. Available at Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain.

What it is used for

The Orange Clear by AK Interactive is a versatile tool for any hobbyist working with translucent parts or looking to tone already painted surfaces without losing what lies beneath. Its main uses are:

  • Tinting indicators, headlights and rear lights on car, motorcycle and military vehicle scale models
  • Colouring canopies and aircraft glazing at scale while preserving the clear plastic effect
  • Creating glazes over painted surfaces to vary the tone without covering the base coat
  • Modifying the colour of metallic parts with a semi-transparent tinted veil
  • Painting gems, crystals and magical elements on wargame miniatures (Warhammer, etc.)
  • Orange light or fire effects on dioramas and miniature bases
  • Translucent finishes and details on cosplay pieces and SFX props

How to use it

  1. Preparation: Shake the bottle well before use. The Clear formula can leave pigment settled at the bottom if it has been sitting for a while. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and, if it is clear plastic, free of fingerprints and grease.
  2. Test on paper: Apply a thin coat on a piece of acetate or test clear plastic to check the coverage level and colour saturation before working on the actual part.
  3. Brush application: Use a soft-hair brush and apply thin, even coats. Transparency builds up: the more coats, the more intense the Orange without losing the translucent effect. Allow to dry between coats.
  4. Airbrush application: Can be used straight from the bottle or slightly thinned with distilled water or AK acrylic thinner. Low pressure and medium distance for a soft, controlled veil.
  5. Drying: Touch dry in 15–20 minutes under normal conditions. Wait at least 30 minutes before applying a second coat or a protective varnish.
  6. Cleaning: Clean the brush or airbrush with water and soap while the paint is still wet. If it has dried, use acrylic thinner.

Tips for use

Control intensity with thin coats

The key to Clear paints lies in building up coats. A single coat gives a subtle, almost imperceptible tint; three or four coats create a vibrant, saturated Orange. Always work from less to more: it is far easier to add colour than to remove it once dry.

Use it over a black base for fire or heat effects

Applied in progressive glazes over a dark base, Orange Clear creates colour transitions ideal for simulating heat marks on exhaust pipes, fire effects on dioramas or the glow of a torch on fantasy miniatures. Combine it with other Clears from the range (yellow, red) for greater realism.

Universal compatibility without surprises

AK Interactive's 3GEN formula is designed to be compatible with any type of cured paint without reacting or lifting the underlying coat. Even so, if you are applying it over a surface with a very delicate finish, always do a test first on a hidden area of the piece.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be applied directly onto clear plastic without priming?

Yes. Orange AK11218 is designed precisely for that: applying onto translucent parts without the need for a primer. If you prime beforehand, you will lose the transparency of the surface. Simply clean the surface of grease and apply thin coats.

How many coats do I need to get an intense colour?

It depends on the effect you are looking for. One coat gives a very subtle tint. For a vivid, saturated Orange that is still translucent, three to four thin coats, allowing each one to dry, are usually enough.

Is it compatible with varnishes and other products in the AK range?

Yes, the Clear range from AK Interactive has universal compatibility. You can apply AK Interactive matt, satin or gloss acrylic varnishes over the Orange once dry without any issues.

Can I use it in an airbrush?

Absolutely. AK11218 has a viscosity suitable for airbrushing. You can use it straight from the bottle for medium coverage coats, or thin it slightly with distilled water or AK acrylic thinner to veil at low pressures with greater control.

Can it be used for painting wargame miniatures as well as scale models?

Yes. Orange Clear is very popular in wargames for painting gems, crystals, glowing eyes and energy or fire effects on miniatures. It also works very well as a glaze to unify shading or warm the tone of specific areas on a figure.

Where can I buy it in Spain?

AK11218 Orange is available at Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain, both through their online store and via their distribution network to specialist modelling and wargame shops.
