Yellow from the AK Interactive Clear range is a water-based acrylic paint specifically formulated to maintain transparency while adding colour. It is designed to tint translucent parts of scale models and miniatures without losing the luminosity or clarity of the base material. Its universal compatibility makes it an extremely versatile tool for both experienced modellers and those just starting out with glazing and tinting techniques.

What it is used for

Yellow is ideal for all situations where you need to modify the tone of a surface without hiding what lies beneath. Thanks to its transparency, you can layer colours without losing textures, metallic shines or the details of the base material.

  • Tinting headlights, optics and position lights on vehicle and aircraft scale models
  • Colouring canopies and aircraft windows while maintaining the transparency of the plastic or resin
  • Applying glazes to warm up or modify the tone of already-painted areas on wargame miniatures
  • Creating coloured light effects on metallic surfaces (NMM, OSL)
  • Tinting transparent resin parts in dioramas and military scale vehicles
  • Use in cosplay and SFX to add colour to visors, acrylic domes and translucent prop elements
  • Modifying the tone of metallic paints to achieve gold, copper or anodised finishes without losing the shine

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: make sure the part is clean, dry and free of grease. If you are tinting bare transparent plastic, a light degreasing with water and soap is sufficient. On already-painted parts, no additional step is needed.
  2. Shake the bottle well: shake for at least 30 seconds before opening. The Clear range may have pigment settle at the bottom if it has not been used for a while.
  3. Brush application: apply in thin, even coats. Yellow is transparent by definition, so the more coats you apply, the more saturated the tone will be. Start with a single coat and assess the result before adding more.
  4. Airbrush application: thin between 10 and 20% with distilled water or AK Interactive's 3GEN thinner. Work at moderate pressures (15–20 PSI) for precise tone control.
  5. Drying: touch-dry time is approximately 15–20 minutes at room temperature. Wait at least 30 minutes between coats to correctly assess the accumulated colour.
  6. Cleaning: clean the brush or airbrush with warm water and soap immediately after use. Do not let the paint dry in the airbrush.

Usage tips

Control intensity through layers

The great advantage of a Clear colour is that you can build up intensity progressively. With a single coat you get a very subtle tint; with three or four coats the Yellow gains presence without becoming opaque. Always work in thin coats and allow drying between them to avoid uneven build-up.

Use it for glazes and colour modulation

Yellow works excellently as a glaze colour over already-painted surfaces. Applied over silver metallics, it simulates the look of a yellow or gold anodised metal. Over neutral or warm base tones, it provides very natural light modulation on fantasy figures and wargame units. Thin it a little more than usual to obtain very subtle glazes.

Compatibility and varnishing afterwards

Yellow is compatible with any type of already-dried paint, whether acrylic, enamel or lacquer. It does not react with or lift the underlying layer. If after tinting you want to protect the part, apply a matte or satin varnish from AK Interactive once the Yellow is completely dry (wait at least one hour before varnishing to ensure perfect adhesion).

Frequently asked questions

Can it be applied directly onto transparent plastic without priming?

Yes. Yellow AK11217 is formulated to adhere to transparent plastic without the need for a primer, as long as the surface is clean and degreased. This is precisely one of its main uses: tinting canopies, headlights and windows without covering the transparency of the material.

How many coats do I need to achieve a solid colour?

This paint is designed to be transparent, not opaque. Even with many coats it will remain translucent. If you need a fully opaque Yellow, the right choice is to use a colour from the conventional Standard range. Yellow Clear is intended for tinting, glazing and lighting effects, not for covering.

Is it compatible with paints from other AK Interactive ranges?

Yes, Yellow AK11217 offers universal compatibility within the AK Interactive ecosystem. You can apply it over acrylic paints from any AK range, as well as over already-cured paints from other bases. It does not react with or damage the underlying layers.

Can I mix it with other Clear colours to obtain intermediate tones?

Yes. The colours in the AK Interactive Clear range are miscible with each other. You can mix Yellow with other Clear colours to obtain translucent oranges, yellowish greens or any intermediate tone you need. Always test on a palette before applying to the part.

Where can I buy this paint in Spain?

Yellow AK11217 is available at Feroca, the official AK Interactive distributor in Spain. From the Feroca online shop you can purchase the entire AK Interactive catalogue with guaranteed original products and shipping to any point on the peninsula.

Do I need a special thinner to use it in an airbrush?

It is not essential. Yellow can be perfectly thinned with distilled water for airbrush use. However, if you are looking for the best results in terms of flow and drying time, AK Interactive's 3GEN thinner optimises the behaviour of the entire water-based acrylic range, including the Clear series.
