What it is used for
Gold paint is one of the most versatile metallics in the AK Interactive Standard range. Its ultra-fine pigmentation allows surfaces to be covered evenly and convincing metallic effects to be achieved on both large pieces and the smallest details.
- Military vehicle models: insignia, emblems, metallic details and decorations.
- Wargame miniatures: weapons, armour, crowns, jewellery and golden decorative elements.
- Historical and fantasy figures: equipment, helmets, shield edges and ornaments.
- Dioramas: prop objects, frames, chalices, lanterns and any element requiring a golden tone.
- Cosplay and SFX: application on resins, foam and other materials for golden finishes on accessories and props.
- Naval and aeronautical modelling: cockpit details, instrumentation and decorative elements.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Make sure the piece is clean, dry and properly primed. For metallics, a black or very dark grey base enhances the shine and intensity of Gold.
- Shaking: Shake the pot well for at least 30 seconds before opening. Metallic paints tend to settle, so this step is particularly important.
- Thinning: For brush use, it can be applied straight or with a few drops of water to improve flow. For airbrush, thin with distilled water or acrylic thinner to the right consistency (approximately 10–20% depending on working pressure).
- Application: Apply in thin, even coats. Allow to dry between coats to control coverage and avoid brush marks. Two or three coats are usually enough for solid coverage and an intense metallic finish.
- Drying: Touch-dry time is approximately 15–20 minutes under normal conditions. Wait at least one hour before applying varnishes or additional coats.
- Cleaning: Clean brushes and airbrush with water and soap immediately after use, before the paint dries.
Usage tips
Dark base for greater impact
Metallics like Gold perform best over dark bases. Priming in black or very dark grey before applying Gold will give the golden tone greater depth and luminosity. If you want a warmer, brighter gold, start from a pure black base; for a more aged gold, a dark brown as the base works very well.
Washes and weathering
Once the Gold coat is dry, apply a satin varnish before working with washes. This will make it easier to control the wash over the golden areas and protect the metallic during the weathering process. A dark wash in the recesses adds depth without losing the impact of the gold.
Airbrush use
When working with Gold in an airbrush, use a medium-gauge needle (0.3–0.4 mm) to prevent the metallic pigments from clogging the nozzle. Maintain moderate pressure and keep the airbrush moving continuously to achieve thin, even coats. Clean the airbrush thoroughly with water after each session.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be used straight from the pot without thinning?
Yes. AK11191 Gold can be applied directly with a brush without prior thinning. If you notice the paint dragging as you spread it, add one or two drops of water to improve flow without losing coverage.
How many coats are needed for full coverage?
On most surfaces with a dark base, two thin coats of Gold are enough for solid, even coverage. Over light bases it may need an additional coat so that the golden tone comes out clean and bright.
Is it compatible with varnishes and other AK Interactive products?
Yes. Gold is fully compatible with AK Interactive water-based acrylic varnishes, whether satin, matt or gloss. It is recommended to let the Gold coat dry completely before applying any varnish or additional product.
Can it be used on resin, foam or plastic?
Yes. Gold's water-based acrylic formula makes it suitable for plastic, resin, foam and metal, as long as the surface is properly primed. For foam, it is especially important to use a flexible primer to prevent the paint from cracking when the material is bent.
Where can I buy this paint in Spain?

What is the difference between this metallic range and the Xtreme Metal range?
The Standard range, to which Gold (AK11191) belongs, is a water-based acrylic paint with a satin metallic finish, ideal for general brush and airbrush work. The AK Interactive Xtreme Metal range is formulated with a solvent base and offers a higher-intensity metallic shine, designed for hyperrealistic effects. The choice depends on the level of finish you are looking for and each modeller's workflow.
