What it is used for
Dark Blue is a general-purpose dark blue, especially versatile for military, naval and sci-fi modelling projects. It covers a wide variety of applications thanks to its dense pigmentation and deep tone:
- Base coat and colour layers on scale models of military vehicles, warships and aircraft
- Uniforms, helmets and equipment for military or historical figures
- Wargame miniatures: troops, creatures and terrain in dark tones
- Backgrounds and shadows in dioramas and interior scenes
- Painting accessories and cosplay pieces that require a deep blue
- Paint effects in SFX and character make-up projects
How to use it
- Prepare the surface: make sure the piece is clean, dry and properly primed. A grey or black primer enhances the depth of Dark Blue.
- Shake the bottle well: before use, shake for at least 30 seconds to homogenise the pigment.
- Thin if necessary: for brush application, use it straight from the bottle or add a few drops of water. For airbrush, thin between 10% and 30% with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner.
- Apply in thin coats: two thin coats cover better than one thick coat. Allow to dry between coats (approx. 15–20 minutes).
- Allow to dry completely: touch-dry time is quick; for a full cure, wait at least 1–2 hours before applying washes or varnishes.
- Clean your tools: clean the brush or airbrush with water and soap while the paint is still wet. If it has already dried, use isopropyl alcohol.
Usage tips
Mixing and transitions
Dark Blue mixes perfectly with other colours from the AK Interactive Standard range. Add white to lighten it and create progressive highlights, or mix with black to achieve deeper shadows in recessed areas. The shared water-based formula guarantees full compatibility between colours in the same range.
Airbrush: pressure and thinning
When working with an airbrush, a pressure of between 15 and 20 PSI with a 20% thinning ratio gives good results for base coats. If you are looking for fine glazes over previous layers, increase the thinning ratio to 40% and reduce the pressure slightly. Always test on a scrap piece before painting the model.
Integration with shading techniques
Once the Dark Blue coat is dry, apply a dark wash in the recessed areas to increase contrast, and use a lighter blue for highlights on edges and raised details. The resulting finish — matte or satin depending on the varnish you choose — allows the colour to integrate seamlessly into any paint scheme.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to thin the paint before applying it?
It depends on the method. With a brush you can use AK11181 Dark Blue straight from the bottle for coverage coats, or add a few drops of water for glazes. With an airbrush, a thinning ratio of 15–25% with distilled water or acrylic thinner is the recommended starting point.
Is it compatible with spray primers?
Yes. Dark Blue by AK Interactive adheres well over any properly cured acrylic or alkyd spray primer. To enhance the depth of the tone, a black or dark grey primer is the most common choice.
How long does it take to dry?
It is touch-dry in approximately 15–20 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. To apply additional coats, washes or varnishes, it is best to wait between 1 and 2 hours to ensure sufficient curing.
Can I use this paint on plastic and resin miniatures?
Yes. The AK Interactive Standard range is formulated to adhere to plastic, resin, white metal and other common substrates used in scale modelling and wargames, always with a suitable primer applied beforehand.
How do I clean the airbrush after using this paint?
Clean the airbrush immediately after use with water and neutral soap while the paint is still wet. If the paint has started to dry inside the airbrush, isopropyl alcohol will dissolve it easily.
