What it is used for
The Pastel Blue tone is designed for modellers looking for soft and desaturated colours, very useful for realistic finishes, figure lighting or the representation of worn materials. Its versatility makes it suitable for very different projects:
- Historical and fantasy figure painting: uniforms, fabrics and equipment for infantry or characters in cool, muted tones.
- Wargame miniatures: base for highlight layers on clothing, armour or accessories in pale blue tones.
- Scenery and dioramas: skies, water surfaces, facades of worn buildings or urban scenery elements.
- Scale vehicles: cockpit interiors, equipment details or backgrounds of technical modules.
- Cosplay and SFX: painting foam, resin or thermoplastic pieces with soft, clean finishes.
- Illustration and miniature art: as a base colour for blending or glazing in artistic painting projects.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer to the piece (available at Feroca in spray or brush format). Pastel Blue covers best over light grey or white backgrounds.
- Shake the bottle: shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before use to homogenise the pigment.
- Thinning: for brush application, use the paint straight or with a light dilution (10–20% water or AK acrylic thinner). For airbrush, thin until you achieve a skimmed milk consistency.
- Application: apply in thin, progressive layers. Pastel Blue can be used as a base colour, for highlights or as a glaze over darker tones.
- Drying: touch-dry time is approximately 15–30 minutes under normal conditions. For additional layers or varnishing, wait at least 1 hour.
- Cleaning: clean the brush or airbrush with running water immediately after use. If the paint has started to dry, use an acrylic airbrush cleaner.
Usage tips
Make the most of the pastel tone for natural highlights
Pastel Blue works very well as an intermediate highlight colour on figures with dark blue or grey clothing. Apply it to the areas where light hits directly before moving on to pure white at the highest points. The result is a smooth and very convincing chromatic transition.
Mix with other tones from the Standard range
As part of the AK Interactive Standard range, Pastel Blue is fully miscible with the rest of the colours in the series. You can mix it with more intense blues to lower saturation, or with whites to increase brightness without losing the blue hue. Feroca, as the official AK Interactive distributor in Spain, has all the colours in the range available so you can complete your palette.
Use it in glazes for atmospheric effects
Thinned to 70–80% with water or acrylic medium, Pastel Blue becomes an excellent glaze for adding depth to shadowed areas of scenery pieces or for simulating mist and distance in large-scale dioramas. Apply two or three thin layers for a progressive, controlled effect.
Frequently asked questions
Can this paint be used directly with an airbrush?
Yes, Pastel Blue (AK11168) is compatible with airbrush. Before using it, thin it with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner until you achieve a fluid consistency. Start with an approximate ratio of 1:1 and adjust according to your equipment and working pressure.
How many coats do I need for good coverage?
Pastel tones, due to their desaturated and light nature, may require two or three coats over dark backgrounds. Over a white or light grey primer, Pastel Blue covers well in two thin coats. Always work in thin layers and allow each one to dry before applying the next.
Is it necessary to varnish after painting?
It is recommended to apply a finishing varnish once the paint job is complete, especially on wargame miniatures that will be handled frequently. A matte varnish protects the paint and unifies the finish. Feroca stocks AK Interactive varnishes compatible with this paint.
How long does this acrylic paint take to dry?
Pastel Blue is touch-dry in approximately 15 to 30 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. To apply a new coat or varnish, it is advisable to wait at least one hour to ensure the previous layer is fully cured.
Can this paint be used to paint foam or resin in cosplay projects?
Yes. Pastel Blue is suitable for foam, resin and other materials commonly used in cosplay and SFX, provided the surface has been properly prepared with a flexible primer or suitable sealant. Being a water-based paint, it does not damage foam when applied over primer.
