What it is used for
Grey-Blue is a cool, intermediate tone that fits a wide variety of projects. Its versatility makes it a go-to colour for base coats as well as intermediate layers and soft shading effects.
- Military vehicle painting: helmets, armoured vehicles and infantry equipment in standard grey or camouflage tones.
- Scale aircraft: fuselages, cockpit interior surfaces and control panels.
- Wargame miniatures: uniforms, metallic armour with a cool base tone and tactical equipment.
- Dioramas: concrete surfaces, weathered stone and urban architectural elements.
- Cosplay and SFX: application on foam, resin or plastic parts for realistic finishes.
- Historical figures: naval uniforms, medieval warriors and modern equipment.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Make sure the piece is clean, free of dust and grease. Apply a compatible primer before painting to improve adhesion.
- Paint preparation: Shake the bottle well before opening. If using an airbrush, thin with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner until you achieve the right viscosity (approximately 10–20% thinning for coverage coats).
- Brush application: Apply in thin, even coats. Allow at least 15–20 minutes of drying time between coats. For better coverage, apply a second coat rather than overloading the first.
- Airbrush application: Use a pressure of between 15 and 20 psi. Work in short passes at a distance of 10–15 cm from the piece.
- Drying: Touch-dry in approximately 20–30 minutes under normal conditions. Full curing may take several hours.
- Cleaning: Clean brushes and airbrush with water or acrylic thinner immediately after use. Do not let the paint dry in your equipment.
Usage tips
Mixing and grey palette
Grey-Blue mixes easily with other tones from the AK Interactive Standard range. Adding white produces cool highlights that are very useful for zenithal lighting on figures and vehicles. With black or dark grey you can create deep shadows without losing the bluish tint of the colour.
Layering and glazing technique
Thanks to its high pigmentation, Grey-Blue allows you to work with heavily thinned glazes over an already dry base. This technique is especially effective for unifying the tone of a surface that already has prior shadow and light work, or for adding subtle chromatic variation on vehicles with large flat surfaces.
Compatibility with varnishes and washes
Once dry, the paint accepts the application of AK Interactive varnishes (satin, matte or gloss) and washes from the AK range without any issues, helping to accentuate details and shadow areas. It is recommended to apply a coat of satin varnish before washes to make them easier to manipulate and clean up.
Frequently asked questions
Does the paint need to be thinned before applying?

Yes, it is recommended to use a primer to ensure adhesion on materials such as plastic, resin or metal. AK Interactive spray primers are compatible with Grey-Blue and the entire Standard range.
Can it be used with an airbrush?
Yes. Grey-Blue (AK11165) is formulated to work both with a brush and with an airbrush. With a 10–20% thinning ratio and a pressure of between 15 and 20 psi you will achieve optimal results.
How long does it take to dry?
Touch-dry in around 20–30 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. For full curing before applying washes or varnishes, it is advisable to wait several hours.
