What it is used for
Pale Blue is a cool, desaturated and highly versatile shade, useful across multiple modelling and creative painting disciplines. Its tone fits a wide variety of projects where you need soft, worn or transitional blues:
- Painting aviation scale models, especially bellies and camouflage bands on World War II or post-war aircraft.
- Wargame miniatures for clothing, uniforms or magical elements with an icy or ethereal look.
- Dioramas: brush-painted skies, frozen water surfaces or cold shadow effects.
- Scale figures: cold lighting, glazing over shadows and colour transitions on skin or clothing.
- Cosplay and SFX: application on accessories, 3D-printed armour or prop elements.
- Military vehicles: base for weathering, chipping or dust effects on light-coloured surfaces.
How to use it
- Prepare the surface: make sure the piece is clean, degreased and has a suitable primer coat. For Pale Blue, a white or light grey primer will enhance the brightness of the shade.
- Shake the bottle: shake well for at least 30 seconds before opening. The highly pigmented formula can settle over time.
- Thinning: for brush use, start with the paint undiluted or with a single drop of water. For airbrush, thin until you reach a skimmed-milk consistency; use AK Interactive acrylic thinner for best results.
- Application: apply in thin, progressive layers. Pale Blue covers well, but several light coats prevent brush marks and create a uniform surface.
- Drying: touch-dry in 15–20 minutes under normal conditions. Wait at least 30 minutes between coats so the film cures properly.
- Cleaning: clean your brush or airbrush with plenty of water immediately after use. If the paint has dried, use AK Interactive acrylic cleaner.
Tips and tricks
Making the most of the shade in lighting and OSL
Pale Blue works very well as a cold light colour in Object Source Lighting (OSL) techniques or zenithal lighting. Mixed with white, it generates very natural highlights on uniforms, armour pieces or metallic surfaces painted in dark colours.
Use as a transition colour in camouflage schemes
On aviation or vehicle models, Pale Blue acts as a smooth transition shade between darker areas and a light base colour. Thinned 1:3 with water, you can use it with an airbrush to create very subtle gradients without losing coverage.
Glazing and washes on miniatures
Thinned generously (1:5 or more with water or glazing medium), Pale Blue allows you to create cold glazes over shadow areas on skin, clothing or surfaces that need to be visually cooled down. This is a particularly useful technique on fantasy or science fiction figures.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to prime the piece before applying this paint?
Yes, it is recommended to apply a primer coat beforehand to ensure adhesion. With Pale Blue, a white or light grey primer gives the best results because the shade is relatively light and translucent in thin layers.
Can I use it directly in an airbrush without thinning?
It is not the most advisable approach. For airbrush use, thin it until you achieve a skimmed-milk consistency. Use AK Interactive acrylic thinner to maintain the paint's properties and avoid clogging the needle.
How many coats do I need for opaque coverage?
Pale Blue, like most light blues, may need 2 or 3 thin coats for solid coverage over a dark base. Over a white or light grey primer, two coats are usually sufficient.
Is this paint compatible with varnishes and washes?
Yes. Once dry and cured, Pale Blue accepts AK Interactive varnishes and washes perfectly. To apply a wash without lifting the base coat, it is advisable to apply a layer of satin varnish first.
Can I mix it with other paints from the Standard range?
Yes, all paints in the AK Interactive Standard range are miscible with each other. You can mix Pale Blue with other colours in the range to adjust the shade to your needs without altering the paint's properties.
Where can I buy it in Spain?
You can purchase AK11161 Pale Blue at Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain, both through their online shop and via their distribution network.
