What it is used for
Green Sky is a colour particularly useful for depicting sky tones in cold climates, atmospheric transition greens and areas of ambient light in dioramas. It also covers a wide spectrum of uses in miniatures and creative projects:
- Skies and horizons in dioramas of military vehicles, aircraft and war scenes
- Base or transition colours on wargame miniatures (fantasy, science fiction, historical)
- Shading and zenithal highlights on scale figures
- Camouflage effects on World War II and modern-era aircraft
- Ambient details on building models, bases and scenery
- Body paint and accessories in cosplay and special effects (SFX) projects
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Make sure the piece is clean, dry and has a suitable primer applied beforehand. Shake the bottle well before opening.
- Thinning: For brush application, you can use the paint straight from the bottle or thin it slightly with distilled water. For airbrush, thin until you reach a milk-like consistency, using distilled water or a specific acrylic thinner.
- Application: Apply thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next to avoid lifting and to achieve greater opacity and precision.
- Drying: Touch-dry time is a few minutes at room temperature. For a full cure, leave the piece to rest for 12 to 24 hours before applying varnishes or additional coats.
- Cleaning: Clean brushes and the airbrush immediately after use with water and soap. If the paint has dried on the equipment, use a specific acrylic thinner.
Usage tips
Colour blending and transitions
Green Sky works very well as an intermediate colour in sky gradients. Combine it with lighter tones towards the zenith and with darker blues or greys towards the horizon to achieve convincing atmospheres in dioramas. Being water-based, mixing with other colours in the Standard range is straightforward and predictable.
Zenithal technique and shading
You can use Green Sky as a light layer on miniatures with green or greyish colour schemes. Applied in thin, diluted coats over a darker base, it acts as a cold ambient light and adds depth to the colour scheme without losing sculpt detail.
Airbrush: pressure and distance
For airbrush work, a pressure of between 15 and 20 PSI with a distance of 10 to 15 cm delivers good results. If you notice the paint clogging at the nozzle, increase the dilution slightly. Correct thinning is key to making the most of the pigmentation in the Standard range.
Frequently asked questions
Is it necessary to prime before using this type of acrylic paint?
Yes, it is recommended to apply a primer beforehand to improve adhesion and durability of the finish. Green Sky and the rest of the colours in the AK Interactive Standard range deliver better results on properly primed surfaces, especially on plastic, resin and metal.
Can I use this paint directly in the airbrush without thinning?
This is not the usual practice. For airbrush use it is recommended to thin Green Sky with distilled water or an acrylic thinner until a fluid consistency is achieved. Using the paint unthinned can clog the nozzle and result in a grainy finish.
How long does this paint take to dry between coats?
Under normal temperature and humidity conditions, Green Sky is touch-dry in 5 to 10 minutes. To apply a second coat without risking lifting the previous one, wait at least 15 to 20 minutes. Full cure can take between 12 and 24 hours.
Can a varnish be applied on top once the painting is finished?
Yes. Once Green Sky has fully cured, you can apply matt, satin or gloss varnishes to protect the finish and adjust the sheen level to the desired result. Make sure the surface is completely dry before varnishing.
Is this paint suitable for wargame miniatures?
Yes. The AK Interactive Standard range, to which Green Sky belongs, is designed for any type of modeller, including wargamers. Its high pigmentation and consistent finish make it especially practical for painting fantasy, science fiction or historical miniatures.
