What it is used for

Mustard is one of the most versatile tones in historical and fantasy modelling. Its range of application spans from base coating to final thin-layer finishes:

  • Base colour or shading on German WWII military vehicles (Dunkelgelb and field variants)
  • Historical uniforms for infantry, artillery, and colonial troops on scale figures
  • Field equipment and accessories: backpacks, canteens, ammunition pouches, and holsters
  • Wargame miniatures: troops, characters, and creatures with armour or objects in warm earth tones
  • Dioramas and scenery: building details, sandbags, aged wood, or dry vegetation
  • Cosplay and SFX: application on polyurethane, foam, or resin surfaces for weathering and ageing effects
  • Modulation layers and colour blending on fantasy or sci-fi figures

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer to the piece. For best results with warm colours like Mustard, a grey or white primer offers greater brightness.
  2. Shaking: shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before use. AK Interactive Standard paint includes an agitator ball to help with mixing.
  3. Thinning: for brush use, apply directly or with a few drops of water. For airbrush, thin with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner to achieve the desired consistency (approximately 1:1 ratio or according to working pressure).
  4. Application: apply in thin, successive coats to achieve uniform coverage and avoid losing detail on the pieces. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next.
  5. Drying: touch-dry time is approximately 15–30 minutes under normal conditions. Full curing may require several hours.
  6. Finishing: once dry, you can apply AK Interactive matte, satin, or gloss varnish depending on the desired final effect.
  7. Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with water and soap immediately after use. If the paint has dried, use a specific acrylic cleaner.

Usage tips

Mixing and modulation

Mustard mixes very well with other colours from the Standard range. Add white for progressive highlights, or mix with browns and oranges to create natural warm shadows. It is an excellent starting colour for working with zenithal or NMM techniques in historical and fantasy settings.

Weathering and ageing effects

To simulate wear on vehicles or equipment, apply Mustard as a chipping layer beneath a subsequent coat of another colour. When removing the top layer with water or a damp toothpick, the Mustard will be exposed, mimicking chipped original paint. It also works very well as a base for washes with earth or sepia tones from AK Interactive.

Airbrush: pressure and distance

When working with an airbrush, use a pressure of between 15 and 20 PSI at a distance of 10–15 cm from the piece. Thin the paint well to avoid needle clogs. Mustard, due to its warm pigmentation, can lose saturation if over-thinned, so test on a sacrificial piece before applying to the final model.

Frequently asked questions

Is it necessary to prime before applying this paint?

Although the AK Interactive Standard range has good adhesion, it is always recommended to prime the surface before painting. With Mustard (AK11130), a light primer enhances the brightness of the tone and improves adhesion on plastic, resin, and metal.

Can it be used straight from the bottle with a brush?

Yes. Mustard can be applied straight from the bottle with a brush, although adding one or two drops of water can improve flow and make it easier to apply in thin coats, especially in detailed areas.

Is this paint suitable for airbrush?

Yes, paints from the AK Interactive Standard range are formulated to work both with a brush and an airbrush. For airbrush use, thin Mustard (AK11130) with distilled water or with the specific AK Interactive acrylic thinner until you achieve the right consistency for your equipment.

Which type of varnish is it compatible with?

Mustard is compatible with AK Interactive water-based acrylic varnishes: matte, satin, and gloss. If you plan to apply solvent-based washes or filters over this paint, make sure to protect it first with a gloss varnish to prevent the solvent from lifting the paint layer.

How long does it take to dry?

Under normal temperature and humidity conditions, Mustard (AK11130) is touch-dry in approximately 15–30 minutes. For full curing before applying additional coats or varnishes, it is recommended to wait at least 1–2 hours.

Where can I buy this paint in Spain?
