What it is used for
Burnt Umber is one of those colours that belongs in every palette. Its warm dark brown tone makes it essential for a wide range of techniques and projects:
- Base coat or colour layer on scale military vehicles, especially for earth, mud and rust areas.
- Shading and colour modulation on historical figures and fantasy miniatures.
- Painting belts, boots, pouches and leather equipment on infantry figures.
- Mixing to create warm shadows over skin or wood tones in dioramas.
- First step in earth and weathering effects on diorama bases.
- Cosplay and SFX applications to create aged leather textures or worn surfaces on thermoplastic and EVA materials.
- Painting wargame miniatures: wood, earth, animal hides and organic equipment.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Make sure the piece is clean, free of grease and properly primed. A dark or neutral primer enhances the depth of Burnt Umber.
- Shaking: Shake the bottle thoroughly for at least 30 seconds before opening. The inner mixing ball helps to homogenise the pigment.
- Thinning: For brush use, apply the paint straight from the bottle or thin it slightly with distilled water (1:1 ratio or less). For airbrush, thin it until you achieve a skimmed-milk consistency; start with 20–30% water and adjust according to your equipment.
- Application: Apply in thin coats and allow each coat to dry before adding the next. Two or three thin coats always give better results than a single thick one.
- Drying: Touch-dry time is approximately 20–30 minutes under normal conditions. Allow to fully cure before applying varnishes or effects on top.
- Cleaning: Clean brushes or the airbrush with running water or soapy water while the paint is still fresh. If it has dried inside the airbrush, use a dedicated acrylic cleaner.
Usage tips
Burnt Umber as a base for rust and earth effects
Burnt Umber works exceptionally well as a base coat under pigments and rust effects. Applied over a dark primer and left to dry, it creates the perfect background for adding layers of orange pigments or earth textures. It is a far more organic starting point than beginning directly with reddish tones.
Mixing and modulation
If you want to deepen the shadows of a mid-brown tone, mix Burnt Umber with a small amount of black or very dark blue. To lighten, gradually add a beige or sand colour. Being a water-based paint with high pigmentation, mixes are predictable and stable.
Wash and shading technique
Thinned at a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio with water (or with a wash medium), Burnt Umber acts as an excellent warm wash for wood, leather and organic equipment. Apply it to recessed areas and let it flow on its own: the results are natural and add depth effortlessly.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be used directly on plastic without priming?
Although the paint will technically adhere to clean plastic, it is always recommended to use a primer first. With Burnt Umber, a dark primer enhances its depth and ensures long-lasting adhesion, especially if the piece is going to be handled frequently.
Is this paint suitable for airbrush use?
Yes. The Standard range from AK Interactive is formulated to work both by brush and by airbrush. For airbrush, thin it with distilled water or a dedicated medium until you reach the right consistency. Start with a 0.3 mm needle or larger to avoid clogging.
How long does it take to dry between coats?
Burnt Umber, like the rest of the Standard range, is touch-dry in around 20–30 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. For a full cure before applying varnishes or effects, wait at least 12–24 hours.
What solvent should be used to clean equipment after using this paint?
As it is a water-based acrylic paint, cleaning is straightforward with running water or soapy water while the paint is still fresh. For dried residue in the airbrush, use an acrylic cleaner. Avoid aggressive solvents such as acetone on plastic parts.
Where can I buy this paint?
Feroca is the official distributor of AK Interactive. You can purchase Burnt Umber (AK11111) directly from the Feroca online store, with worldwide shipping and a guarantee of genuine product.
Can it be mixed with other paints from the same range?
Yes, all paints in the AK Interactive Standard range are compatible with each other and can be freely mixed to create custom shades. Burnt Umber blends particularly well with the earth, sand and black tones in the range to build very complete shading and modulation palettes.
