Medium Rust is an acrylic paint from the AK Interactive Standard range, formulated with high pigmentation to achieve a medium rust tone in a single coat. Its water-based formula makes cleaning easy and allows it to be used with both brush and airbrush, making it an essential reference for corrosion and weathering effects on scale models and miniatures. Feroca is the official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain.

What it is used for

Medium Rust is the go-to colour for representing active rust and corrosion at an intermediate stage — that orange-brown tone that appears when metal has been exposed to moisture over time. Its most common uses are:

  • Corrosion and oxidation effects on military vehicles, tanks and industrial machinery at scale.
  • Painting of degraded areas on helmets, armour plating and metallic structures in dioramas.
  • Intermediate layers in chipping and weathering techniques on wargame miniatures.
  • Representation of rusted pipes, tanks or machinery in wargame scenery.
  • Base colour for rust effects combined with pigment powders or enamel washes.
  • Characterisation of props and armour in cosplay or SFX requiring a worn metallic appearance.

How to use it

  1. Preparation: Shake the bottle well for 30 seconds before opening. Make sure the surface is primed and free of dust or grease.
  2. Thinning: For brush use, apply straight from the bottle or with one or two drops of distilled water. For airbrush, thin by 10–20% depending on the pressure and nozzle type.
  3. Application: Apply in thin coats and allow each one to dry before the next. Medium Rust provides good coverage in two coats and allows thinned transparent glazes to modulate the intensity of the rust.
  4. Drying: Touch-dry time is between 15 and 30 minutes under normal conditions. To speed up drying, use a cool-air hair dryer at a distance.
  5. Cleaning: Clean the brush or airbrush with warm water immediately after use. If the paint has dried in the nozzle, use isopropyl alcohol.

Tips and advice

Build up the rust in layers

The best results are achieved by combining several tones. Start with a darker shade as a base, apply Medium Rust as the main coat, then add a lighter and more saturated tone on the edges and areas of greatest wear. This gives the rust depth and a realistic appearance.

Combine it with pigment powders and washes

Medium Rust works excellently as a solid base over which to apply enamel washes to enhance shadows, or orange-toned pigment powders to add a rough texture to the rust. The acrylic base is compatible with enamel and oil products applied on top.

Chipping technique with Medium Rust

To simulate chipped original paint revealing oxidised metal underneath, apply Medium Rust over the metallic primer, allow it to dry completely, and cover with the final colour coat. When chipping with a sponge or salt pencil, areas of Medium Rust will be exposed, imitating the rust beneath the stripped paint.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used straight from the bottle with a brush without thinning?

Yes. Medium Rust has a suitable consistency for use straight from the bottle with a brush for covering coats. If you want to apply glazes or glazing, add a few drops of water to increase transparency.

What pressure do you recommend for airbrush?

For airbrush use, working between 15 and 20 PSI with a 0.3 or 0.4 mm nozzle is recommended. Thin Medium Rust by 10 to 20% with distilled water or with the acrylic thinner from the AK Interactive range until you achieve the consistency of skimmed milk.

Is it compatible with varnishes and finishing products?

Yes. Once dry, Medium Rust accepts acrylic, oil and enamel varnishes applied on top without any issues. It is recommended to protect with a matt or satin varnish before applying enamel washes to make removal easier and to protect the paint layer.

How long does it take to dry completely?

Medium Rust is touch-dry in around 15–30 minutes. For a full cure that allows further coats to be applied without risk of reactivating the underlying paint, wait at least 1 hour under normal temperature and humidity conditions.

Where can I buy this paint in Spain?

Feroca is the official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain. You can purchase Medium Rust (AK11105) directly from the Feroca online store with shipping throughout Spain and Europe.

What surface does it need for good adhesion?

Medium Rust adheres correctly over acrylic or lacquer primer. For plastic, resin or metal, always apply a primer coat first to ensure adhesion and the durability of the final finish.
