What it is used for

Wine Red is a deep reddish tone, close to garnet, that covers a wide range of uses in both scale modelling and other creative disciplines. Its versatility makes it a go-to colour for solid colour work, gradients and shading.

  • Military vehicles: interior upholstery, equipment details and markings
  • Historical and fantasy figures: cloaks, uniforms, fabrics and clothing accessories
  • Wargame miniatures: armour, banners, gems and decorative elements
  • Dioramas: architectural details, prop objects and scenery
  • Cosplay and SFX: painting accessories, foam armour and resin parts
  • Aircraft and civilian vehicles: markings, insignia and cockpit details

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: make sure the piece is clean, dry and properly primed. A dark primer intensifies the tone of Wine Red.
  2. Shaking: shake the bottle well before opening. If the pigment has been settled for a while, use a stirring stick to mix from the bottom.
  3. Brush application: apply in thin, even coats. Two coats are enough for full coverage. Allow to dry between coats.
  4. Airbrush application: thin 10–20% with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner. Recommended pressure between 15 and 20 PSI.
  5. Drying: touch dry in 10–15 minutes; fully cured in 24 hours. Avoid thick coats to prevent cracking.
  6. Cleaning: clean brushes and the airbrush with water while the paint is still wet. If it has dried, use a dedicated acrylic cleaner.

Usage tips

How to get the most out of Wine Red

To deepen the tone and achieve a richer look, apply a dark basecoat before Wine Red. You can also mix it with black or brown to create shadows without needing a separate wash product.

Highlights and gradients

Mix Wine Red with a cream or light orange tone to create highlights on fabrics and figure cloaks. Smooth transitions using drybrushing give a particularly striking result on scale-painted textiles.

Storing the bottle

Close the bottle tightly after each use and store it upright, away from heat sources and direct light. If the paint thickens over time, add a few drops of distilled water and stir before use.

Frequently asked questions

Does this paint need to be thinned for brush use?

For brush use, Wine Red can be applied straight from the bottle on most surfaces. If you want a thinner coverage or are working over large areas, a light thinning with distilled water improves flow without losing pigmentation.

Can it be used without an airbrush?

Yes. Wine Red is formulated to perform well with both brush and airbrush. A fine synthetic hair brush gives you precise control; a flat brush or wide brush achieves quick coverage over large surfaces.

Does it need a primer first?

Using a primer is recommended, especially on resin, metal and untreated plastic. A dark primer enhances the depth of the tone and improves long-term adhesion of Wine Red.

What finish does this paint have once dry?

The AK Interactive Standard range offers a finish that ranges from matt to slightly satin depending on the colour and dilution. Wine Red tends towards a soft satin finish, ideal for fabrics and organic surfaces. If you need a fully matt or gloss finish, apply a final varnish.

Is it suitable for cosplay pieces or foam?

Yes. Wine Red adheres well to sealed foam and primed resin pieces, making it a practical option for cosplay and SFX. Make sure to seal the foam thoroughly before painting to prevent it from absorbing too much paint.
