What it is used for
Matt Red is a versatile pure red, suitable for multiple disciplines within scale modelling and creative arts. Its matte finish makes it especially useful in applications where light reflection is unwanted, such as historical figures or military vehicles with red markings.
- Military vehicle models: markings, fire extinguishers, cockpit details and aircraft or tank panels
- Wargame miniatures: base coats on armour, tunics, banners and character cloaks
- Dioramas: small-scale props, signs, urban or decorative elements
- Historical and fantasy figures: uniforms, equipment and colour accents
- Cosplay and SFX: painting 3D-printed parts, foam, latex or other surfaces
- Naval and aeronautical modelling: identification markings, flags and structural details
How to use it
- Preparation: Shake the bottle well for 30–60 seconds before opening. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and properly primed to improve adhesion.
- Thinning: For brush application, use it straight from the bottle or add a few drops of water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner to achieve the desired consistency. For airbrush, thin it to a milk-like consistency (approximately 20–30% thinner).
- Application: Apply in thin, even coats. For full coverage, 2–3 coats are usually needed, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.
- Drying: Touch-dry in 15–30 minutes under normal conditions. Before applying washes or wet techniques, wait at least 1 hour or apply an intermediate protective varnish.
- Cleaning: Clean brushes or the airbrush with water while the paint is still wet. If it has dried, use AK Interactive acrylic thinner.
Usage tips
Base coats and coverage
To achieve solid coverage with Matt Red, it is better to apply several thin coats rather than one thick one. Reds tend to benefit from a dark intermediate layer (dark grey or black) as a base to gain depth and prevent the underlying colour from interfering.
Integration with shading and highlighting techniques
Matt Red works very well as a base coat over which to apply dark washes in recessed areas. For highlights, mix directly on the palette by adding a small amount of a lighter tone. The matte finish allows subsequent layers to adhere without the need for an intermediate varnish in most cases.
Airbrush use
If using an airbrush, always test the thinning ratio on paper before applying to the piece. An overly thinned flow can lead to loss of colour saturation. With a 0.3–0.4 mm nozzle you will get optimal results on medium and large surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to prime the piece before applying this paint?
Yes, it is recommended to apply a primer beforehand to improve adhesion and coverage. With Matt Red, a dark grey or black primer under the red helps achieve a deeper, more saturated colour with fewer coats.
Can I use this paint straight without thinning?
For brush application, Matt Red can be used straight from the bottle for coverage coats. If you notice it dries too quickly on the palette or leaves brush marks, add a few drops of water or acrylic thinner to improve flow.
Is this paint compatible with varnishes and washes?
Yes. Once dry, Matt Red accepts water-based acrylic washes without any issues. If you plan to apply solvent-based washes, it is advisable to apply a protective satin varnish first to prevent the wash from lifting or staining the colour layer.
How many coats are needed for full coverage?
Generally, 2–3 thin, fully dried coats achieve solid, uniform coverage. Reds usually need a dark base coat beforehand to reduce the number of coats required.
Is it suitable for airbrush?
Yes, Matt Red is formulated to be compatible with both brush and airbrush. For airbrush, thin it with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner until you reach the right viscosity before applying.
