Deep Red (AK11088) is an acrylic paint from the Standard range by AK Interactive, formulated with high-concentration pigments to achieve an intense, opaque red in just a few coats. Its water-based formula makes it easy to clean and thin, and it works equally well with a brush or airbrush. Available at Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain.

What it is used for

Deep Red is a versatile shade that covers everything from Soviet military vehicles and industrial machinery to historical uniforms, fantasy miniatures and cosplay pieces. Its high pigmentation makes it especially useful when you need a vivid, opaque red without having to apply endless coats.

  • Military vehicle models: red interiors, markings and identification signs.
  • Wargame miniatures: base coats on uniforms, armour and red banners.
  • Dioramas: signage elements, industrial containers and machinery details.
  • Historical figures: infantry uniforms, guard corps and period coats.
  • Cosplay and SFX: application on EVA foam, 3D-printed resin or latex pieces.
  • Scale aircraft: national markings, identification bands and logos.

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer (preferably grey or black) and allow it to dry completely. A clean, grease-free surface ensures optimal adhesion.
  2. Shaking: shake the bottle for at least 30 seconds before opening. High-concentration pigments tend to settle, and thorough shaking ensures a uniform consistency.
  3. Thinning: for brush use, you can apply it straight from the bottle or thin it with distilled water or acrylic retarder at 10–20%. For airbrush use, thin until you reach a milk-like viscosity and work at a pressure of 15 to 20 PSI.
  4. Application: apply in thin, even coats. Deep Red has good coverage, but two thin coats always give a better result than one thick coat.
  5. Drying: touch-dry in 15–20 minutes. To apply additional coats or varnishes, wait at least 30 minutes. Full cure is reached in 24 hours.
  6. Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with water and soap immediately after use. If paint has dried inside the airbrush, use warm water and a cleaning brush on the channels.

Usage tips

How to get the most out of reds

Reds have historically been difficult to cover over light backgrounds. Always apply Deep Red over a dark primer or directly over black to achieve maximum saturation with the minimum number of coats. If you start from a mid-grey background, add a thin coat of orange before the red to boost the vividness of the colour.

Mixing and shading

Deep Red mixes well with other acrylics from the AK Interactive Standard range. For shadows, add a small amount of dark brown or black at low ratios (a maximum of 10–15%) to avoid muddying the tone. For highlights, mix with a warmer or more orange shade instead of adding white directly, as white tends to desaturate the red and produce unnatural pinkish results.

Storage and bottle maintenance

Store the bottle upright, in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Always clean the neck and thread before closing to prevent the cap from being sealed by dried paint. If the paint has thickened, add a few drops of distilled water and shake vigorously before use.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used straight from the bottle with a brush?

Yes. Deep Red has a consistency designed for direct brush application in coverage coats. However, if you want greater flow or are working with glazing techniques, thin it slightly with distilled water or acrylic retarder.

Is it compatible with spray primers?

Absolutely. AK11088 Deep Red adheres without any issues over AK Interactive spray primers and over any properly primed surface. It is recommended to allow the primer to dry for at least one hour before applying the paint.

Can it be used with an airbrush?

Yes. Thin Deep Red with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner until you achieve a fluid consistency, and work at a pressure of 15 to 20 PSI. A 0.3 or 0.4 mm needle is the most suitable for this paint.

What varnish is recommended to apply over this paint?

You can apply any AK Interactive acrylic varnish — matte, satin or gloss — depending on the final finish you are looking for. The varnish also protects the paint and prepares the surface for applying washes or filters afterwards.

Is it suitable for cosplay pieces or unconventional materials?

Yes. Deep Red can be used on EVA foam, resin, 3D-printed PLA and latex, as long as the surface is properly prepared with a flexible primer or suitable sealer. On highly flexible materials, add a couple of drops of flexible medium to prevent cracking.

Where can I buy this paint?

AK11088 Deep Red is available at Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain. You can purchase it directly from the Feroca online store with shipping across mainland Spain.
