What it is used for
Ruby is a versatile colour within the red range that covers a wide spectrum of applications in modelling and creative arts. Its dark, saturated red tone makes it especially useful for:
- Military vehicle models: markings, emblems, tail lights and cockpit details
- Wargame miniatures: base coats and shading on red armour, cloaks and character details
- Historical and Napoleonic figures: uniforms, flags and accessories
- Dioramas: decorative elements, scene props, rust effects with enriched tone
- Cosplay and props: painting accessories, helmets, shields and resin or plastic armour
- Special effects (SFX): base for blood mixtures, gems and hand-painted crystals
How to use it
- Surface preparation: make sure the piece is clean, grease-free and properly primed. A dark grey or black primer will enhance the depth of the Ruby colour.
- Thinning: for brush use, apply straight from the bottle or thin with distilled water or acrylic medium at approximately a 1:1 ratio. For airbrush use, adjust the thinning until you achieve a fluid consistency without losing coverage.
- Application: apply in thin, successive coats. The first coat may look translucent — this is normal. Two or three coats will give you solid, even coverage.
- Drying: touch-dry in 10–15 minutes under normal conditions (20 °C, moderate humidity). Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
- Finish: apply a matt or satin varnish according to the final result you are looking for before adding washes or filters.
- Cleaning: clean your brush or airbrush with water while the paint is still wet. If it has dried, use a specific acrylic thinner.
Usage tips
Colour mixing and transitions
Ruby works very well as a base over which to build highlights with lighter reds or shadows with darker tones. Do not shake the bottle too vigorously just before painting; shake gently and let it rest for a few seconds to avoid bubbles on the surface.
Airbrush use
Thin it with acrylic medium instead of water alone to maintain pigment cohesion at low pressures (between 10 and 15 psi). This is especially useful when working on small miniatures or detailed areas. Move the airbrush in continuous strokes at a short distance for thin colour coats.
Weathering and ageing effects
Being a water-based paint, it takes chipping and weathering effects applied on top once dry very well. You can work over it with products from the AK Interactive weathering range without reactivating the base colour, as long as you have applied an intermediate satin or matt varnish beforehand.
Frequently asked questions
Is it necessary to prime before applying this paint?
Yes, it is highly recommended. Applying a suitable primer improves the adhesion of Ruby on plastic, resin or metal. On porous surfaces such as MDF it is also advisable. Without primer, the paint may crack or peel over time.
Can I use this paint directly in an airbrush without thinning?
It is not recommended. Ruby, like the rest of AK Interactive's Standard range, has a consistency designed for brush use. For airbrush it should be thinned with distilled water or acrylic medium to achieve the right fluidity, avoiding needle blockages and achieving an even finish.
How many coats are needed for good coverage?
Generally two or three thin coats of Ruby are enough for solid coverage over primer. Red and saturated colours usually require more coats than dark ones, so patience between coats makes all the difference to the final result.
Is this paint compatible with acrylic washes and filters?
Yes, as long as you apply an intermediate varnish before the wash. Ruby, once dry, can be slightly reactivated by water if left unprotected, so a satin or matt varnish from the AK Interactive range is recommended between the colour coat and any weathering product.
Where can I buy this paint in Spain?
Feroca is the official AK Interactive distributor in Spain. You can purchase Ruby (AK11084) directly from the Feroca online store, where you will find the entire Standard range available with stock in Spain and fast shipping.
How should I store the bottle once opened?
Close the bottle tightly after each use to prevent the paint from drying out. Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. If the paint thickens over time, you can add a few drops of distilled water and shake gently to restore the original consistency.
