What it is used for

Deep Violet is a versatile shade that fits a wide range of projects wherever you need rich, saturated violets, whether as a base colour or in shading and highlighting layers:

  • Base coats on wargame miniatures: robes, armour, magical energies and arcane elements.
  • Uniforms, insignia and details on scale models of military vehicles or aircraft.
  • Dioramas and historical figures where violet appears in fabrics or imperial symbolism.
  • Cosplay projects and prop-making, on rigid surfaces or plastics primed beforehand.
  • Shadow and gradient effects in SFX painting and artistic sculpture.
  • Mixing with other colours from the Standard range to obtain intermediate shades and customise palettes.

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: clean and degrease the piece. Apply a suitable primer (grey, black or white depending on the desired effect) to improve adhesion of the Deep Violet.
  2. Shaking: shake the bottle thoroughly for at least 30 seconds before opening. Deep Violet contains highly concentrated pigments that may settle.
  3. Brush application: apply thin, even coats. Allow to dry between coats (10–15 minutes) to avoid marks and achieve a uniform coverage.
  4. Airbrush application: thin with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner between 20% and 40% depending on pressure and nozzle size. Use short, overlapping passes.
  5. Drying: touch-dry is reached in approximately 15–20 minutes under normal conditions. Wait at least 1 hour before applying varnish coats or filters.
  6. Cleaning: clean brushes with water and soap while the paint is still wet. For the airbrush, flush with water followed by acrylic thinner until the fluid runs clear.

Usage tips

Make the most of the colour depth in shading

Deep Violet works very well as a shading layer over lighter blue or mauve tones. Apply it thinned in shadow areas and blend the edges with a damp brush before it dries to achieve smooth transitions without needing a wash.

Mixing and blending

Being a water-based acrylic paint, Deep Violet mixes effortlessly with the rest of the Standard range from AK Interactive. Add white for progressive highlights or mix with blues to shift the tone towards indigo. Always test the mix on a wet palette to extend your working time.

Compatibility with varnishes and filters

Once fully dry, Deep Violet accepts matt, satin and gloss varnishes from the AK Interactive range without lifting or altering the colour. If you plan to apply filters or enamels on top, seal first with a gloss varnish to protect the base coat.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to thin the paint before using it?

It depends on the application method. By brush, Deep Violet can be applied straight from the bottle or with a small amount of water for very thin coats. With an airbrush, it is common to thin between 20% and 40% with distilled water or acrylic thinner to achieve proper flow without losing coverage.

What surfaces does this paint work well on?

Deep Violet adheres correctly to plastic, resin, metal and wood as long as the surface is clean and primed. Without primer, adhesion may be compromised on very smooth or non-porous surfaces.

How many coats are needed for good coverage?

Thanks to the high pigmentation of the AK Interactive Standard range, two thin coats over a light base are usually enough for solid coverage. Over dark backgrounds an additional coat may be necessary.

Is it suitable for use with an airbrush?

Yes. Deep Violet is formulated to work both by brush and with an airbrush. Thin it appropriately and run flow tests before working on the final piece.

How do you clean up after using it?

If the paint is still wet, water and soap are enough to clean brushes and airbrush. Once dry, you will need an acrylic thinner. It is important to clean the airbrush immediately after each session to prevent clogging.
