What It Is Used For
Lilac is a shade that appears in a wide variety of modelling and applied arts projects. It covers everything from historical uniforms and fantasy gear to decorative details on vehicles and dioramas. Its application range makes it a reference colour in any working palette:
- Wargame miniatures: clothing, cloaks, magical armour and character details for fantasy or sci-fi settings
- Collector figures and dioramas: flowers, shadows on light fabrics, ultraviolet or magical light effects
- Scale vehicles and aircraft: decorative markings, alternative or fantasy paint schemes
- Cosplay and props: painting helmets, foam or resin weapons, and themed accessories
- SFX artistic make-up: base for tonal skin blends of fantastical beings (fairies, elves, creatures)
- Architectural modelling and dioramas: wildflowers, shadows on light stone, twilight skies
How to Use It
- Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer (light or dark depending on the desired effect) and allow it to dry completely before starting.
- Shake well: shake the bottle for 30–60 seconds before opening to homogenise the pigmentation.
- Thinning: for brush application, use the paint straight or with a slight water dilution (5–15%). For airbrush, thin between 20–40% depending on working pressure and the desired effect.
- Application: apply in thin, even coats. Allow to dry between coats (10–15 minutes under normal conditions). Full coverage is generally achieved in two coats.
- Shading and highlights: once the basecoat is dry, mix Lilac with darker tones for shadows or with lighter colours for highlight areas, using glaze coats for smooth transitions.
- Final varnish: protect your work with a matte, satin or gloss varnish depending on the finish you need.
- Tool cleaning: clean the brush or airbrush with water and soap while the paint is still wet.
Tips and Techniques
Mixing and Transitions
Lilac mixes very well with other acrylics from the AK Interactive Standard range. To achieve a cool, luminous tone, mix it with a pure white; for deep shadows without losing the character of the colour, combine it with a dark violet or a cool blue. Always work in small proportions on a wet palette to control consistency.
Airbrush Use
With a 30% dilution and a pressure of between 15 and 20 psi you will get a stable flow ideal for zenithal highlights and gradients. Lilac responds very well to accumulated thin coats, so you can build up the colour saturation progressively without losing control of the tone.
Thin Coats and Glazing Effects
If you thin Lilac to 50–60%, you get a translucent glaze that you can use to tint white or light grey surfaces with a lilac hue, create magical light effects or unify the finish of a figure. It is especially useful on highlight areas of fantasy figures painted by hand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this paint compatible with an airbrush?
Yes. AK11071 Lilac is formulated for use with both brush and airbrush. For airbrush, it is recommended to thin between 20 and 40% with water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner, and to work at a pressure of 15–20 psi for the best results.
What surfaces can it be applied to?
Lilac adheres well to plastic, resin, metal and polystyrene, as long as the surface is clean, dry and preferably primed. In cosplay or SFX projects it can be used on EVA foam, cardboard and other porous materials with a suitable primer.
How long does it take to dry?
Under normal conditions (room temperature of 20–22 °C and moderate humidity), AK11071 Lilac is touch-dry in approximately 10–15 minutes per coat. For full curing before varnishing or handling the piece, it is recommended to wait at least 24 hours.
Is it necessary to varnish after painting?
It is not strictly required, but it is highly recommended. A final varnish protects the work from wear and unifies the finish. Over Lilac you can apply a matte varnish for a more subdued and realistic finish, or satin if you want to retain some life in the colour.
Where can I buy this paint?
AK11071 Lilac is available from Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain. You can purchase it directly from the Feroca online store with shipping throughout Spain and Portugal.
Can it be mixed with other paints from the same range?
Yes. Lilac is fully miscible with the rest of the acrylic paints in the AK Interactive Standard range, allowing you to create custom tones with complete freedom. You can also mix it with AK Interactive mediums and retarders to modify flow and drying time.
