What it is used for
Sickly Pink is a muted, sickly, desaturated pinkish tone, ideal for representing pale flesh, diseased or degraded organic tissue, and light effects on pink surfaces. It is a highly versatile colour for human figure projects and for dark fantasy or horror scenes.
- Figure painting: pale skin tones, highlight areas on light or sickly complexions
- Wargame miniatures: undead warriors, demonic creatures, horror figures
- Dioramas: wound effects, organic tissue, biological surfaces
- Science fiction and fantasy models: organic interiors, biomechanical ships, scenery
- Cosplay: prosthetic make-up and foam or resin pieces with a diseased skin appearance
- SFX and special effects: character pieces with a degraded organic finish
How to use it
- Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer to the piece (acrylic or spray). For pink tones over a dark base, consider using a white or light grey undercoat so the colour develops its full intensity.
- Shaking: shake the bottle well before use. The mixing ball inside helps homogenise the pigment.
- Thinning: for brush application, you can apply directly or thin slightly with water. For airbrush, adjust the thinning until you achieve the right viscosity, typically between 10% and 20% water.
- Application: apply in thin, progressive layers. Sickly Pink works very well as a glaze over shadow areas to create subtle transitions in skin tones.
- Drying: touch-dry time is approximately 15–30 minutes depending on the layer applied and ambient temperature. Allow to dry completely between coats.
- Cleaning: clean the brush or airbrush with water and soap while the paint is still wet. If it has dried, use a dedicated acrylic cleaner.
Usage tips
Mixing and tone gradations
Sickly Pink mixes well with other colours from the Standard range to achieve tone variations. Adding white produces very soft highlights for areas of maximum illumination on pale skin. Mixed with warmer flesh tones, it creates natural transitions in human figure or creature skin tones.
Use in washes and glazes
Thinned with more water or with an acrylic medium, Sickly Pink works as a glaze to unify previously painted areas and add a cool pinkish tint. It is a very useful technique for giving chromatic coherence to skin tones built up with many layers.
Combining with chipping and weathering techniques
In horror or dark fantasy projects, this colour fits perfectly when combined with chipping techniques, dark washes, and organic fluid effects. Apply it as an intermediate layer before filters so that deteriorated textures gain visual depth.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to thin the paint before using it with an airbrush?
For airbrush use, thinning is recommended. With Sickly Pink by AK Interactive, a dilution of between 10% and 20% with distilled water is usually sufficient to achieve a proper flow without losing coverage. Adjust according to the pressure and type of airbrush you use.
How many coats are needed for opaque coverage?
It depends on the base. Over a white or light grey primer, Sickly Pink can cover well in 2 thin coats. Over dark bases it may need 3 or more coats to cover completely. Working with thin layers always gives better results than a single thick coat.
Can this paint be used on resin and foam?
Yes. AK Interactive water-based acrylic paints adhere well to primed resin and to foam treated with a flexible primer. For foam, always use a primer specifically designed for flexible materials and avoid very thick coats that may crack.
Is it necessary to apply varnish after painting?
It is recommended to protect the piece with a final varnish coat, especially if it will be handled (gaming miniatures, cosplay pieces). Varnish also helps unify the finish if you have combined matt and satin areas throughout the painting process.
How long does the bottle last once opened?
If you close the bottle tightly after each use and store it in a cool, dry place, the paint will keep in good condition for a long time. If you notice it starting to thicken, you can add a few drops of water and shake well to restore the consistency.
