What it is used for

Deep Yellow is a highly versatile colour that covers a wide range of uses in scale modelling, miniatures and artistic disciplines. Its high pigmentation makes it a solid choice for both base coats and highlight colours in figure painting techniques.

  • Scale models: African, Japanese or German desert military vehicles, construction machinery and civilian trucks.
  • Wargame miniatures: uniforms, insignia, equipment and decorative elements requiring intense, opaque yellows.
  • Dioramas: traffic signs, industrial machinery, dry vegetation or urban props.
  • Historical and fantasy figures: golden armour pieces, cloaks, banners and ornaments.
  • Cosplay and SFX: application on rigid surfaces, foam, latex and resin for solid colour finishes.
  • Aircraft: identification codes, colour bands and squadron markings.

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: Apply a suitable primer for the material you are going to paint. For plastic or resin surfaces, a grey or white primer will enhance the brightness of Deep Yellow.
  2. Shaking: Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before use. The high pigment concentration may settle over time.
  3. Thinning: For brush application, it can be used straight from the bottle or with a few drops of water or acrylic medium. For airbrush, thin 20–30% with distilled water or acrylic thinner until the right consistency is achieved.
  4. Application: Apply in thin, even coats. Thanks to the high pigmentation, one or two coats are generally enough for full coverage.
  5. Drying: Touch-dry in 15–30 minutes at room temperature. Allow to dry completely before applying successive coats, filters or varnishes.
  6. Cleaning: Clean the brush or airbrush with warm water immediately after use. If the paint has dried in the airbrush, use a dedicated acrylic cleaner.

Usage tips

Maximising yellow coverage

Intense yellows can be difficult to cover over dark backgrounds. With Deep Yellow, first apply a white or cream base coat as an intermediate layer; this will give you maximum colour brightness with fewer coats without losing the vibrancy of the tone.

Integration into shading and highlighting techniques

Deep Yellow works very well as a mid-tone in a light progression. Mix small amounts with a lighter yellow for the brightest highlight areas, and add a touch of orange or brown for intermediate shadows. This adds depth and realism to any figure or vehicle.

Airbrush use on large surfaces

If you need to cover large surfaces such as vehicle bodies or aircraft panels, thin it slightly more than usual and work in gentle, crossed passes. The high pigment concentration allows the richness of the colour to be maintained even with generous thinning, making smooth transitions and gradients easier to achieve.

Frequently asked questions

Does this paint need to be thinned before using it with an airbrush?

Yes, for airbrush use it is recommended to thin Deep Yellow by 20–30% with distilled water or an acrylic thinner. The paint has very high pigmentation, so a slight thinning is enough to achieve optimal flow without losing coverage.

How many coats are needed for full coverage?

Thanks to the high pigment concentration of Deep Yellow, in most cases one or two thin coats over a light primer are sufficient. Over dark backgrounds it is recommended to first apply a white or cream base coat to get the most out of the colour.

Can it be mixed with other paints from the same range?

Yes, Deep Yellow is fully miscible with all other water-based acrylic paints from AK Interactive. You can create custom mixes for highlights, shadows or mid-tones directly on the palette without any compatibility issues.

Is it suitable for use on foam or cosplay materials?

Yes. Being a water-based acrylic paint, Deep Yellow can be applied to EVA foam, latex, resin and other common cosplay and SFX materials, as long as the surface is properly primed to prevent cracking with movement.

What finish does it have once dry?

The finish of Deep Yellow once dry is satin-matt, depending on the thickness of the coat and the thinning used. If you need a specific finish, apply a matt or satin varnish from AK Interactive once the piece is complete.
