What it is used for
Dark Grey is a neutral and highly useful tone in scale modelling and creative projects. Its versatility makes it one of those colours you can never have too much of on your working palette:
- Base coat and intermediate layers on military vehicles, tanks and armoured vehicles in scale.
- Painting metal structures, industrial machinery and concrete surfaces in dioramas.
- Shading and preshading on aircraft, ships and science fiction vehicles.
- Painting wargame miniatures: dark armour, bases, rocks and terrain.
- Base for weathering effects, rust and chipping on grey surfaces.
- Cosplay and SFX projects: aged metallic surfaces, armour pieces or scenery.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: clean and degrease the piece. Apply a suitable primer to improve adhesion, especially on plastic, resin or metal.
- Shaking: shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before use to homogenise the pigment.
- By brush: apply thin coats and allow to dry between each one. Dark Grey covers well from the second coat with a good dilution.
- By airbrush: thin with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner until the desired consistency is reached. Recommended pressure between 15 and 20 PSI.
- Drying: touch dry in 15–20 minutes. Fully cured in 24 hours before applying varnishes or washes.
- Cleaning: wash the brush or airbrush with water and soap immediately after use while the paint is still wet.
Usage tips
Thin coats for better results
With highly pigmented acrylic paints like this one, it is preferable to apply several thin coats and allow them to dry in between. This way you avoid losing the raised details of the miniature or model kit and achieve a more even finish.
Dark Grey as a working base
This tone works very well as a starting point for zenithal highlighting techniques: apply Dark Grey as a general base coat and add a lighter grey from above to create volume quickly and effectively. It is also ideal as a first coat before applying metallic effects or dark washes.
Compatibility with the rest of the AK Interactive range
Dark Grey is fully compatible with the varnishes, washes, pigments and effects from the AK Interactive range. You can mix it directly with other Standard paints to create transitions or tone variations without any adhesion or chemical compatibility issues.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to thin the paint before applying it with an airbrush?
Yes, for airbrush use it is recommended to thin Dark Grey with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner. The exact dilution depends on the type of airbrush and the pressure, but it is usually around 20–30% of the paint volume. For fine brush work it can be used directly or with minimal thinning.
Is it necessary to use a primer before painting?
It is not essential, but it is highly recommended. On plastic, resin or metal surfaces, a primer noticeably improves the adhesion of Dark Grey and the durability of the final finish, especially if the piece is going to be handled frequently or subjected to weathering techniques.
How long should I wait between coats?
Dark Grey dries to the touch in approximately 15–20 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. To apply a second coat with complete confidence, wait at least 20–30 minutes. Before applying varnishes or washes on top, ideally wait 24 hours for full curing.
Can it be mixed with other acrylic paints from the same range?
Yes. Dark Grey AK11022 is compatible with the rest of the paints in the AK Interactive Standard range and also with other water-based acrylic ranges from the brand. You can mix them on a palette to obtain lighter or darker greys depending on the needs of your project.
Is it suitable for use on wargame miniatures?
Absolutely. The AK Interactive Standard range is designed for all types of modellers, including wargamers. Dark Grey is especially useful for painting dark armour, terrain bases, rocks and metallic surfaces on miniatures of any scale.
