What it is used for

Basalt Grey is a highly versatile dark grey tone that covers a wide variety of situations in scale modelling, wargames and special effects. Its neutral, cool colour temperature makes it particularly useful in the following contexts:

  • Base coat and intermediate layers on scale military vehicles, armoured vehicles and heavy machinery.
  • Representation of rocky surfaces, paving, asphalt and diorama elements with a stony appearance.
  • Shading and blending on wargame figures (Warhammer and similar), especially on chainmail, harnesses and tactical gear.
  • Base coat for engines, vehicle interiors and shadow areas on scale aircraft.
  • Cosplay and SFX applications for stone textures, worn metal or armour with a sombre finish.
  • Starting point for custom mixes of greys and cool neutral colours.

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: Make sure the piece is clean, dry and free of grease. Apply a compatible primer if you are painting on plastic, resin or white metal.
  2. Shaking: Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before use. The high-pigmentation formula requires proper mixing to achieve a homogeneous colour.
  3. Brush application: Apply thin coats and allow each one to dry before adding the next. Two or three coats are enough for solid coverage without losing detail.
  4. Airbrush application: Thin with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner until the right viscosity is achieved (a rough guide is 1:1, or adjust according to working pressure). Apply in soft, overlapping passes.
  5. Drying: Touch-dry is reached within a few minutes under normal conditions. Wait at least 30 minutes before applying additional coats or varnishes.
  6. Cleaning: Clean brushes and the airbrush with water and soap while the paint is still wet. Once dry, use a specific acrylic thinner.

Usage tips

Mixes and gradients

Basalt Grey works very well as a base tone for building gradients upward with lighter greys, or for darkening towards blacks and bluish greys. Mix small amounts directly on the palette to control colour transitions without wasting product from the bottle.

Weathering and ageing effects

Applied in very thin, diluted coats over lighter surfaces, Basalt Grey acts as a subtle shader to simulate dirt, early rust and wear from use. Combined with chipping techniques or washes, it adds depth and realism to military vehicles and wargame figures.

Storage and preservation

Store the bottle tightly sealed, upright and away from heat sources and direct light. If the paint has thickened slightly, add a few drops of distilled water and shake again. Do not leave dried residue on the bottle neck, as it can hinder closing and accelerate drying of the product.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a primer before applying this paint?

In most cases, yes, it is recommended. On plastic, resin or metal, a suitable primer improves the adhesion of Basalt Grey and ensures the final colour is accurate and long-lasting. On already painted surfaces or those with previous acrylic layers, it can be applied directly.

Can I use it directly with an airbrush without thinning?

This is not the usual approach. The Standard range by AK Interactive is formulated for brush use, so for airbrush it is best to thin it with distilled water or a specific acrylic thinner until it reaches a skimmed-milk consistency. This prevents clogging and gives you a clean atomisation.

What type of varnish is it compatible with?

Basalt Grey is compatible with water-based acrylic varnishes. You can apply a matt varnish to seal the paint before working with washes or additional effects, or a satin varnish if you want that finish in specific areas. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly before varnishing.

Is it suitable for small-scale wargame figures?

Yes. The high pigmentation of the Standard range provides good coverage even at small scales such as 28mm or 15mm, while maintaining the sculpt detail. Apply thin coats to avoid losing relief in areas with fine detail.

Where can I buy this paint in Spain?

Feroca is the official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain. You can purchase Basalt Grey (AK11021) directly from Feroca's online store, with regular availability and shipping throughout Spain.

Is it safe to use indoors?

Yes. Being a water-based acrylic paint, Basalt Grey does not contain aggressive solvents and can be used indoors with basic ventilation. Even so, it is recommended not to ingest the product and to keep it out of reach of children.
