Dark Sea Grey is an acrylic paint from the Standard range by AK Interactive, water-based and highly pigmented to deliver solid, even coverage from the very first coat. Its medium-dark grey tone with a cool undertone makes it an essential reference for naval vessels, aircraft, and any project that calls for accurate scale greys. What it is used for

Dark Sea Grey covers a wide range of applications in scale modelling and artistic painting, especially where a grey with a naval or aeronautical character is needed:

  • Base coat or layer colour on scale warships, destroyers, and aircraft carriers.
  • Painting fuselages and surfaces of military aircraft with grey schemes.
  • Base for chipping, weathering, and wear effects on armoured vehicles.
  • Shading or transition tone on wargame miniatures with dark grey equipment.
  • Scenery and diorama element: concrete floors, metal structures, bunkers.
  • Cosplay pieces and props requiring a matt metallic finish or industrial grey surface.
  • Shadow and depth effects in SFX projects and special effects make-up.

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer (preferably in a grey or black tone) to ensure adhesion. Make sure the piece is clean and free of dust or grease.
  2. Thinning: for brush work, Dark Sea Grey can be used straight from the bottle or with a slight dilution in distilled water (5–15 %). For airbrush, thin with AK Interactive acrylic thinner until you achieve a skimmed-milk consistency.
  3. Application: apply in thin, even coats. For brush work, use soft strokes, avoiding build-up. For airbrush, maintain a pressure of 15–20 PSI and a distance of 10–15 cm from the piece.
  4. Drying between coats: wait 15–30 minutes before applying a new coat. Full drying occurs in approximately 24 hours.
  5. Finishing and protection: once dry, apply the appropriate varnish for the desired finish (matt, satin, or gloss) to protect the work and prepare the surface for filters and weathering.
  6. Cleaning: clean the brush with water and soap immediately after use. For the airbrush, use AK Interactive acrylic thinner for a thorough flush of the system.

Tips and tricks

Scale and tone correction

In scale modelling, dark tones tend to look heavier than they do in real life. To compensate for the scale effect on very small pieces, mix Dark Sea Grey with a small amount of white or light grey. This brings the visual result closer to the tone you would perceive on the real object at 1:1 scale.

Integration into shading and highlighting techniques

Dark Sea Grey works very well as a mid-tone in an NMM (Non-Metallic Metal) lighting progression or in light-and-shadow schemes on figures. Darken it with black or a greyish blue for shadow areas, and lighten it with light grey or off-white for highlights. The high pigmentation of the Standard range makes these mixes easy without losing opacity.

Weathering and subsequent effects

Being a water-based acrylic paint, Dark Sea Grey is perfectly compatible with subsequent weathering work using enamel or oil products without lifting the base coat, as long as you have sealed it beforehand with a suitable varnish. This opens the door to filters, washes, and pigment powders to take the piece to a whole new level of realism.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to thin the paint before using it with a brush?

Not always. Dark Sea Grey from the AK Interactive Standard range has a ready-to-use consistency straight from the bottle in many situations. If you want greater flow or thinner, more transparent coats, a dilution of 5–15 % in distilled water is enough. For airbrush use, more thinning is necessary.

Is it compatible with spray primers?

Yes. Dark Sea Grey adheres perfectly over acrylic or lacquer-based spray primers, as long as the primer coat is fully cured. AK Interactive spray primers are an ideal option for preparing the surface before applying this paint.

Can it be used with an airbrush?

Yes, the AK Interactive Standard range is formulated to work with both brush and airbrush. For airbrush use, thin Dark Sea Grey with AK Interactive acrylic thinner until you achieve a fluid consistency and work at pressures of 15–20 PSI.

How long does it take to dry?

Touch dry is achieved in 15–30 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. Full drying and maximum hardness of the coat are reached in approximately 24 hours. In very humid or cold environments, these times may increase.

Can I mix this paint with other colours from the same range?

Yes. All colours in the AK Interactive Standard range are miscible with each other, allowing you to create intermediate and custom tones with complete freedom. Dark Sea Grey is especially versatile as a base for mixes of greys, greyish blues, and neutral tones.
