What it is used for
The Playmarker Brass is designed for those who need to apply the colour Brass quickly and precisely, without setting up a full painting kit. Its acrylic formula withstands successive coats and is compatible with subsequent weathering techniques.
- Painting metallic details on wargame miniatures (buttons, buckles, barrels, chains)
- Quick highlighting of golden or copper-toned areas on scale models
- Colour sketching and edge lining on fantasy or science fiction figures
- Touching up damaged areas after assembly or transport
- Applying metallic colour to cosplay pieces, accessories and props
- Base colour effects in SFX and character make-up work
- Dioramas and military vehicles: brass details, artillery and equipment
How to use it
- Surface preparation: make sure the piece is clean, dry and free of grease. For best results, apply a white primer compatible with acrylics beforehand. AK Interactive primer sprays are a straightforward option.
- Loading the marker: shake the marker for a few seconds with the cap on. Then press the tip against a test surface until the paint saturates the felt tip.
- Application: apply the colour Brass with smooth, even strokes. The felt tip allows both fine lines and filling of small areas. You can layer coats while wet to blend tones, or wait for drying for greater opacity.
- Drying: drying is fast as it is water-based acrylic. Under normal conditions, the surface is ready for a second coat within minutes.
- Weathering and varnishing: once dry, you can apply weathering products on top without any risk of lifting the paint. If you want to change the finish to matt or gloss, cover with any acrylic-compatible varnish.
- Cleaning: if the tip becomes clogged or accumulates dirt, remove it and rinse it with water. The tip is, so you can replace it whenever necessary.
Tips and tricks
Blend and create transitions directly on the piece
The Playmarker Brass can be blended while the paint is still wet using a brush slightly dampened with water. This allows you to create smooth transitions between Brass and adjacent colours, or simulate selective wear on edges and raised details without needing a palette.
White primer for greater Brass luminosity
AK Interactive recommends using white primer before applying Playmarkers to get the most out of the coverage and colour tone. On a white base, Brass gains depth and better resembles the appearance of real brass, especially in areas of direct light.
Frequently asked questions
Can this type of marker be applied to plastic without primer?
Technically yes, as the Playmarker Brass adheres to plastic, resin, metal and wood. However, AK Interactive recommends applying a white primer beforehand to achieve the best coverage and colour fidelity for Brass. Without primer, more coats may be required to achieve uniform coverage.
Can I use shading and wash techniques on top once it is dry?
Yes. Once cured, the paint of the Playmarker Brass resists the application of weathering products such as washes, pigments or filters. There is no risk of those products' solvents lifting the Brass layer, so you can work on ageing effects with complete freedom.
How many coats are needed to cover a dark surface well?
The Playmarker Brass has high coverage, but on very dark backgrounds it may need two or three coats for a completely opaque result. To avoid this and save time, the most practical approach is always to start with a light primer.
What should I do if the tip dries out or becomes clogged?
Remove the felt tip with tweezers and rinse it under running water. If the damage is irreversible, replace it with a new tip. Since it is, the marker body and the Brass paint it contains remain perfectly usable.
Is it compatible with matt, satin and gloss varnishes?
Yes. The natural finish of the Playmarker Brass is satin, but you can modify it without any problem by applying any acrylic varnish on top. A matt varnish will integrate it better into the overall look of the miniature; a gloss varnish will enhance the metallic appearance of the Brass.
