Vertical-groove metal deaeration roller for laminates. Removes air and excess resin in hard-to-reach areas. 14x35 mm.

The vertical-groove metal deaeration roller is the specific tool for consolidating fibre laminates in hard-to-reach areas, where a conventional roller cannot work with the same effectiveness. Its vertical channel design displaces excess resin and expels trapped air between layers, ensuring a bubble-free lamination with uniform impregnation.

What it is used for

This roller is designed for hand lay-up lamination, especially in complex geometries, sharp angles and interior areas where a larger roller cannot operate comfortably. The vertical groove channels excess resin towards the edges and pushes air to the surface, preventing delamination and internal voids.

  • Fibreglass laminates with polyester or epoxy resin
  • Consolidation of mat, woven or multiaxial layers
  • Tight-radius areas, angles and recesses in moulds
  • Carbon fibre laminates in detail areas
  • Localised repairs on existing laminated parts
  • Open mould composite work

How to use it

  1. Apply the first coat of resin onto the mould with a special laminating brush, ensuring a uniform initial impregnation.
  2. Place the reinforcement fabric or mat onto the wet resin and press by hand so it settles without wrinkles.
  3. Apply resin over the reinforcement until it is completely saturated and translucent.
  4. Pass the vertical metal deaeration roller with short, firm strokes over the entire laminated surface, paying special attention to areas with complex geometry.
  5. Direct the roller movements so that air and excess resin are pushed towards the edges or drainage areas.
  6. Add successive layers by repeating the process until the desired laminate thickness is reached.
  7. When finished, clean the roller with acetone or a suitable solvent before the resin cures.

Usage tips

Pressure and rolling technique

Apply firm but controlled pressure. Too much pressure can displace the reinforcement or create resin-starved areas; too little pressure will not effectively remove the air. Always work in the same direction on each pass and slightly overlap the previous pass to avoid leaving untreated areas.

Temperature and working time

Resin viscosity varies with temperature. At low temperatures (below 18 °C) the resin is thicker and deaeration requires more time and effort. At high temperatures the working time is considerably shortened, so organise the process to use the roller before the resin starts to gel. When working with polyester resin laminates, always work within the gel time determined by the catalyst ratio used (around 1.5% by weight).

Roller cleaning and maintenance

Clean the roller immediately after each use with acetone or the solvent recommended for the resin used. The vertical groove can accumulate resin in the channels if not thoroughly cleaned; use a stiff-bristle brush to make sure the channels are completely clean. A well-maintained roller lasts indefinitely.

Frequently asked questions

What is the advantage of the vertical groove compared to other roller types?

The vertical channels of this roller allow excess resin and air bubbles to flow sideways as the roller advances. Other groove designs (spiral, diagonal) are more versatile on flat surfaces, but the vertical channel is particularly effective in detail areas, angles and tight radii where the working direction is limited. The vertical metal deaeration roller is designed precisely for those critical areas of the laminate.

What types of resin can I use this roller with?

It is compatible with polyester, epoxy and vinylester resins, which are the most common systems in hand lamination. Being metal, it perfectly resists solvents and the chemical action of any of these systems. Always clean with the appropriate solvent for the resin used.

What is the difference between this roller and the standard metal deaeration roller?

The standard metal deaeration roller has larger dimensions and is optimised for wide surfaces. This model with a vertical groove and dimensions of 14 x 35 mm is smaller and more manoeuvrable, making it ideal for confined areas, interior angles and details where the larger roller does not fit or does not roll correctly.

When should I use the roller during the lamination process?

You should use it while the resin is still in a liquid state, before gelification begins. Once the resin starts to become pasty it is no longer possible to remove air effectively. Plan the work to have enough time between resin application and roller use, especially on large parts or those with many layers.

Can I use this roller on carbon fibre laminates?

Yes, it is perfectly suitable for carbon fibre. Bear in mind that carbon fabrics are more delicate regarding fibre displacement, so apply pressure evenly and avoid abrupt lateral movements that could misalign the fabric.

How do I clean the roller if the resin has already started to cure?

If the resin is in the gel phase or partially cured, soak the roller in acetone for a few minutes to soften the residue and then brush the channels with a stiff-bristle brush. Avoid leaving cured resin accumulated in the channels, as this would reduce the effectiveness of deaeration in subsequent uses.

What accessories do I need to complete a full lamination?

For a basic hand lamination you need the appropriate resin (polyester, epoxy or vinylester), the reinforcement (mat, woven or multiaxial), a special laminating roller for wide surfaces, a special laminating brush to apply the resin, and this vertical metal deaeration roller for detail areas. A casting ladle makes it easier to dose and pour resin without waste.
