What they are used for

These brushes are designed for work that demands precision and control. Their nylon bristles are compatible with a wide variety of workshop and artistic painting materials, from low-viscosity silicones to acrylic paints and pigmented resins.

  • Applying silicone to brush-on moulds (thin layer brush technique)
  • Painting miniatures and collectible figures
  • Retouching details on scale models and mock-ups
  • Face and body painting for special effects
  • Nail decoration with gel or acrylic
  • Ceramic and craft finishing
  • Applying pigments and acrylic paints onto cured moulds
  • Precision strokes with watercolour or oil in illustration

How to use them

  1. Select the right size according to the level of detail you need: the 000 is the finest, ideal for very thin lines; the 0 has a bit more body for slightly larger areas.
  2. Lightly dampen the brush before using it with acrylic paints or watercolours to help distribute the colour evenly.
  3. Load the brush with just the right amount of material: with brush-on silicones, too much can create bubbles; with paints, heavily loaded layers make control more difficult.
  4. Apply the material with smooth, controlled strokes, following the direction of the detail you want to cover.
  5. If you are making a brush-on mould, wait until each silicone layer is tacky before applying the next one to prevent it from running.
  6. When finished, clean the brush immediately: with warm water if you have used water-based paints or water-based silicones; with the appropriate solvent if you have worked with resins, oils or solvent-based silicones.
  7. Store brushes vertically with the bristles facing up or horizontally — never resting on the bristles.

Tips for use

Brush-on moulds: control your layers

When applying silicone with a brush, use size 0 for broader areas and 00 or 000 for corners and fine details. Do not overload the brush: it is better to apply several thin layers than a single thick one that may trap air or run before curing. Always wait until the previous layer is tacky to the touch before continuing.

Painting miniatures: the thin layer method

For miniatures, start by priming the piece with a coat of primer. Then apply a diluted base colour, shade with washes (thinned paint pools in the recesses) and highlight with an almost dry brush loaded with very little colour. Size 000 is the best choice for highlight lines and extreme details. Finish with a protective varnish to seal the work.

Cleaning and maintenance to extend brush life

Never leave a brush submerged in solvent for hours: nylon can soften and lose its shape. Always clean immediately after finishing work, shape the tip with your fingers while it is still damp and leave to dry horizontally. If the bristles have splayed, you can reform the tip by dampening it and briefly wrapping it in paper.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sizes 0, 00 and 000?

The number indicates the thickness of the bristles: the more zeros, the finer the brush. Size 0 is the largest in the set, suitable for medium-detail areas; 00 is intermediate; and 000 is the finest, ideal for very thin lines, outlines and highlight points on miniatures or special effects work.

Can this type of brush be used to apply silicone?

Yes. Nylon brushes are a common tool in the brush-on mould technique, where silicone is applied in successive layers over the model. It is important to clean them immediately after use, before the silicone cures on the bristles.

What solvent should I use to clean the brushes after using resin or silicone?

It depends on the material used. For acrylic paints or water-based silicones, warm soapy water is sufficient. For uncured epoxy or polyester resins, use the solvent recommended by the resin manufacturer (typically acetone or a specific solvent). For condensation or addition silicones, clean with a mild aprotic solvent or white spirit. Always act before the material cures.

Are these brushes suitable for face painting and special effects makeup?

Yes, the synthetic nylon bristles are soft and suitable for applying face paints, artistic makeup and special effects products on skin. For more specialised SFX makeup work, you can also complement them with brushes from the TITANIC PRO-FX range, designed specifically for that use.

How many silicone layers are needed for a brush-on mould?

It depends on the viscosity of the silicone and the final wall thickness you need, but typically between 4 and 8 layers are applied to achieve a mould with sufficient wall strength. Each layer must be tacky before applying the next. Once the desired thickness is reached, the mould is reinforced with a rigid fibreglass and resin shell.

Can these brushes be used with oil paints?

Yes. Nylon is compatible with oil paints. Clean the brush at the end of the session with a suitable solvent for oils and allow it to dry thoroughly before storing.

Which brush size is best for painting 28 mm scale miniatures?

For 28 mm miniatures, size 000 is the most suitable for fine details such as eyes, emblems or highlight lines. Size 00 is useful for base coats on small areas, and size 0 for larger surface areas such as robes or armour. This set covers the three most common levels of detail in miniature painting.

Are there more specialised brushes for special effects and artistic makeup?

Yes. For SFX makeup and precision liner work, Feroca offers the TITANIC PRO-FX range, with models such as the Brush 101 fine liner and the Brush 102 angle liner, designed specifically for skin applications and special effects.
