What it is used for

Grime FX are designed for any situation where you need to give a dirty, degraded, burnt or aged look quickly and convincingly. Each shade has a distinct use:

  • Ash — Ash, burnt wood and charcoal residue. Perfect for scorched characters, explosions, fires and post-apocalyptic environments.
  • Coal — Coal, soot and dark grease. Ideal for industrial or workshop makeups, or to achieve an intense blackened effect on the face, hands and clothing.
  • Dirt — Dark brown earth. Very versatile for simulating dry mud, accumulated grime and general wear on skin, costumes and accessories.
  • Grit — Dark soil and rubble. Adds visual texture and a rough, urban look, ideal for survival characters or degraded environments.
  • Plains Dust — Clay soil and reddish-brown earth. Perfect for road dust, desert environments and earthy grime with a warm undertone.
  • Stone — Stone grey tone to simulate construction dust, rubble, rock or cold industrial environments.

How to use it

  1. Make sure the surface to be treated (skin, prosthetics or fabric) is dry and free of excessive grease.
  2. If working on skin or silicone prosthetics, apply the makeup base first and, if necessary, seal with an encapsulant to set the prosthetic.
  3. Gently shake the container or use a powder brush, sponge or fingers to apply the powder directly to the desired area.
  4. Distribute with light tapping or gentle blending depending on the effect sought: build-up in crevices for depth or an even layer for general grime.
  5. Combine two or more shades for more complex and natural effects.
  6. Set the final result with a Fixing Spray if the makeup will be subjected to sweat, intense movement or outdoor conditions.
  7. To remove the product from skin, a gentle cleanser or water is sufficient.

Usage tips

Mix shades for greater realism

No real environment has just one type of dirt. Combine Coal with Ash for explosion and fire effects, or mix Dirt with Grit for a more complex and believable mud effect. Dry layering is simple and reversible during the process.

Work in thin layers and build up

It is much easier to add powder than to remove it. Start with a light layer and build up in the areas where dirt would naturally settle: wrinkles, crevices, clothing folds, prosthetic edges and contact areas. This gives an organic and convincing result without caking.

On silicone prosthetics, blend the edge before applying the powder

If you are working on a platinum silicone prosthetic, make sure you have properly blended and sealed the edge with an encapsulant before applying the Grime FX powders. The powder helps unify the transition between the prosthetic and the skin and eliminates any residual shine from the silicone, contributing to a completely matte and natural finish.

Frequently asked questions

Can these powders be used directly on skin?

Yes. Ben Nye Grime FX powders are formulated for use on skin and are commonly used on film, television and theatre sets. Even so, as with any cosmetic product, it is recommended to perform a sensitivity test on a small area before extensive application.

Do they also work on fabrics and costumes?

Yes, Grime FX adhere perfectly to textiles, leather, plastic and other materials. They are widely used in costume design to age, dirty and degrade garments quickly and in a controlled manner. Bear in mind that on fabrics they may stain permanently if not washed promptly.

Are they resistant to sweat and movement?

Grime FX powders are not designed to be water- or sweat-resistant on their own. If you need greater durability during filming or a show with a lot of physical activity, apply a makeup Fixing Spray once you have achieved the desired effect.

How are they removed from skin?

Being dry powders, most of the product is removed simply with water and a gentle cleanser. No special makeup-removing products are required for removal from skin.

Can they be applied over silicone prosthetics?

Yes. Grime FX work very well over silicone prosthetics once they are properly fixed and made up. It is recommended to use an encapsulant to seal the edges and prepare the surface before applying the powders, which ensures the powder adheres correctly and unifies the finish.

Which shade should I choose for a fire or explosion effect?

For a convincing fire or explosion effect, the typical combination is Ash (ash and grey tone) together with Coal (soot and intense black). You can add Stone for cooler, more neutral areas. Apply Coal to the areas of greatest impact and Ash in a more diffused outer layer to mimic the real deposit of ash.

How many grams does each jar include and is it enough for a complete job?

Each jar contains 25g of product in shaker format. For most single-character makeups, this quantity is more than sufficient. If you are working on long productions or need to cover several people or garments, it is advisable to have more than one jar of the main shade.

Can the different shades be mixed together?

Yes, all six Grime FX shades are designed to be used both separately and in combination. Mixing Dirt with Grit gives a complex dirt effect, while layering Plains Dust over Dirt adds a warm reddish undertone. Dry mixing and layering is straightforward and gives you total control over the final result.
