Kit of 3 medical-grade adhesives for FX prosthetics: Pro-Key Acrylic, Sil-Key Silicone and Sil-Key Thinners. 60 ml containers.

The Adhesive Trio Sil-Key is a value-format kit that brings together the three essential products for applying special effects prosthetics: the acrylic adhesive Pro-Key, the silicone adhesive Sil-Key and the thinner Sil-Key Thinners, all in 60 ml containers. All three products are cosmetic-medical grade, designed to work directly on skin with maximum safety and durability guarantees.

Technical specifications

Component Type Volume Grade
Pro-Key Adhesive Water-soluble acrylic adhesive 60 ml Cosmetic / medical
Sil-Key Adhesive Pressure-sensitive silicone adhesive 60 ml Cosmetic / medical
Sil-Key Thinners Thinner for Sil-Key Adhesive 60 ml Cosmetic / medical

What it is used for

This trio is designed for special effects professionals, theatrical and film makeup artists who need to adhere silicone or foam prosthetic pieces to skin safely with an invisible finish. The three products cover the most common FX workshop workflows:

  • Application of platinum silicone prosthetics directly onto the actor's or model's skin.
  • Making and applying PAX paints (acrylic mixed with pigments) to match skin tone using Pro-Key.
  • Sealing and filling edges with Pro-Key to achieve imperceptible transitions between the prosthetic and natural skin.
  • Creating custom bondo applications with Pro-Key as a binding agent.
  • Controlled thinning of Sil-Key Adhesive to adapt it to different application methods (fine brush, airbrush).
  • Long-duration on-set work where an adhesive is required that will not give way with sweat or facial movement.

How to use it

  1. Prepare the skin: clean and degrease the application area with a mild cleanser free of residual alcohol. The skin must be completely dry.
  2. Choose the adhesive based on the prosthetic material: use Sil-Key Adhesive for platinum silicone prosthetics and Pro-Key Adhesive for latex foam pieces or PAX paint applications.
  3. Adjust the viscosity of the Sil-Key (if necessary): add between 10% and 15% of Sil-Key Thinners to the adhesive to make it more fluid. Do not exceed this ratio or drying time will increase considerably.
  4. Apply the adhesive: spread a thin, even layer on both the back of the prosthetic and the skin. Use a fine-tipped brush or a makeup sponge.
  5. Wait for the tack point: allow to dry until the adhesive is slightly tacky but not wet (between 30 and 60 seconds depending on ambient temperature).
  6. Place the prosthetic: position carefully from the centre towards the edges, pressing gently to ensure full contact.
  7. Work the edges: apply Pro-Key to the margins of the prosthetic with a fine brush and blend to integrate it with the skin.
  8. Remove the prosthetic: peel away gently using a specific remover or Sil-Key Thinners in areas where Sil-Key Adhesive was used. Pro-Key is removed with water.
Important notice — use on skin: although these products are cosmetic-medical grade, always perform a patch test 24 hours before use on set or in a show, especially on sensitive or allergy-prone skin. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. In case of irritation, remove the product with plenty of water and consult a healthcare professional.

Usage tips

Temperature and humidity on set

Sil-Key Adhesive is sensitive to environmental conditions. In very humid environments drying time increases; in very dry conditions it may lose tackiness before the piece is placed. If you are working outdoors or under intense heat lights, prepare small portions and work in sections to maintain control.

Precise dilution of Sil-Key Thinners

The recommended usage ratio for the thinner is 10–15% of the adhesive volume. For airbrush work you can go up to the upper limit, but for brush application it is preferable to stay at 10%. Always mix in a separate container and add the thinner gradually, not the other way around. Adding too much thinner reduces final adhesion strength and can cause the prosthetic to lift during filming.

Combine Pro-Key and Sil-Key on the same prosthetic

On large pieces it is common practice to use Sil-Key on the central body of the prosthetic (greater strength and durability) and Pro-Key exclusively on the edges for integration and blending work. This mixed approach makes the most of each adhesive: the long-term strength of Sil-Key and the ease of handling and correction of the acrylic Pro-Key.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the two adhesives in the kit?

Pro-Key Adhesive is a water-soluble acrylic adhesive, ideal for foam prosthetics, PAX paint and edge work where you need to retouch or correct easily. Sil-Key Adhesive is a high-strength silicone adhesive suspended in a cosmetic solvent, designed to bond platinum silicone prosthetics with greater durability on set. This kit includes both so you can choose based on the piece material and the type of work.

When should I use the thinner and when should I not?

Sil-Key Thinners is only used with Sil-Key Adhesive, never with Pro-Key. You need it when the adhesive viscosity is too high for the application method (very fine brush or airbrush) or when you need to extend its working life in the container. If you are applying with a sponge or medium-sized brush, you can use it undiluted. Do not mix the thinner with Pro-Key, as they have different bases and are not compatible.

Can this kit be used on any skin type?

Both adhesives are cosmetic-medical grade and are formulated for use on skin. However, a patch test is always recommended 24 hours beforehand, especially on sensitive, reactive or dermatitis-prone skin. Apply a small amount to the inner forearm and observe the reaction before use on the face.

How is the silicone adhesive removed from skin?

Sil-Key Adhesive is removed by applying Sil-Key Thinners (included in the kit) to the edges of the prosthetic and allowing the solvent to penetrate gently. Do not pull the piece off dry to avoid irritating the skin. Pro-Key Adhesive, being water-soluble, is removed with warm water and mild soap without the need for a solvent.

Is this adhesive compatible with platinum silicones?

Yes, Sil-Key Adhesive is specifically designed to bond prosthetics made with platinum (addition) silicones to skin. It is one of the reference adhesives in the FX industry for this type of material. If you work with latex foam prosthetics, the Pro-Key Adhesive in the same kit is the most suitable choice.

Can I make PAX paints with Pro-Key?

Yes. Pro-Key Adhesive is suitable for formulating PAX paints by mixing it with compatible pigments or acrylic paints. This mixture is used to match the prosthetic tone to natural skin, apply shading or visually integrate the edges. It is one of the most common applications of this adhesive in professional makeup.

What is the advantage of buying the kit versus the products separately?

The Adhesive Trio Sil-Key is a value format that includes all three products in a single order at a reduced price. It is especially practical if you already know you will need all three (acrylic adhesive, silicone adhesive and thinner), as it covers the different stages of the FX prosthetic application process without having to place multiple orders.

What other adhesives for FX prosthetics are available?

In addition to the Adhesive Trio Sil-Key, Feroca distributes the PROTAC Acrylic Adhesive for FX Makeup and the Telesis 8 Silicone Adhesive, a high-strength professional reference widely used in film. For those using Telesis 8, its specific thinner Telesis 8 Thinner is also available.
