Super Sculpey Ultralight 227g
19,36 € Tax incl.
Super Sculpey Ultralight is the lightest polymer clay in the entire Sculpey range. Thanks to the glass microspheres integrated into its formula, cured pieces have a density below 1 g/cm³ and literally float on water. With 227 g (8 oz) of white clay ready to sculpt, it is the ideal choice when volume matters but weight cannot be compromised: cosplay helmets and armor, large-format figures, voluminous jewelry, or Christmas decorations that respect the tree branches.

What it is used for
- Filling large cosplay pieces to reduce the total weight of the costume (helmets, armor).
- Lightweight cores and internal armatures in large-volume sculptures or collectible figures.
- Handcrafted jewelry: voluminous pendants and earrings without excessive weight.
- Christmas tree ornaments and decorations that do not bend the branches.
- Bath toys that float on water and handprint or paw print molds.
- Paper embellishments, scrapbooking, and mixed-media projects.
How to use it
- Condition the clay: knead briefly until it is soft and pliable. It requires less effort to work than conventional clays thanks to its lightness.
- Sculpt or fill: use it as a filler mass in large pieces or sculpt directly by hand. It accepts textures from stamps, rollers, and sculpting tools.
- Apply an armature if needed: for long, thin pieces such as tentacles or wings, reinforce the interior with thin wire before baking to prevent breakage.
- Bake: place the piece in a conventional oven at 130 °C for 15 min per every 6 mm of thickness. Do not use a microwave or exceed the indicated temperature.
- Finish and paint: once cool, sand, drill, or paint with water-based acrylics. Apply an acrylic primer beforehand to seal the porous surface and achieve a more uniform finish.
Important: always bake in a well-ventilated conventional oven and never exceed 130 °C; higher temperatures may release unpleasant fumes. Do not use the same oven for cooking food after baking clay without thoroughly cleaning it first. Take special care when baking thick pieces: if the interior does not reach the curing temperature, the piece will be fragile. For thicknesses greater than 12 mm, increase the baking time proportionally.
Tips and tricks
Combine it with other Sculpey clays for lighter cosplay pieces
Use the Ultralight as a core to create the base volume of a helmet or armor, then cover it with a thin layer of Super Sculpey Beige or Super Sculpey Flex Firm for surface detailing. This combination can reduce the total weight of the piece by half while retaining all the definition of the details.
Take your time: it does not air dry
Unlike air-dry clays, the Ultralight does not harden outside the oven. You can leave a project unfinished, wrap the clay in plastic wrap, and pick it up days or weeks later without any change in texture. Store it at room temperature, away from direct heat sources.
Prime the surface before painting
The cured finish is slightly porous. Apply a coat of gesso or spray primer before painting to seal the surface, improve adhesion, and achieve more vivid and even colors. This step is especially important when using an airbrush or spray lacquers.
Frequently asked questions
Does it really float on water?
Yes. The hollow glass microspheres integrated into the formula reduce the density of the material below 1 g/cm³, which is the density of water. Properly cured pieces float effortlessly, making them an excellent option for bath toys or decorations that need to stay on the surface.
Is it less durable than standard Super Sculpey?
In very thin sections (less than 3 mm) the Ultralight is somewhat more fragile than Super Sculpey White or standard Beige. However, at a minimum thickness of 3–4 mm the strength is sufficient for normal and decorative use. In large-volume pieces, the weight reduction more than compensates for the reduced rigidity.
Can I paint it with an airbrush?
Yes, as long as you prime the piece beforehand with gesso or a spray primer. Once the porous surface is sealed, the Ultralight accepts airbrushing, thinned acrylics, and spray lacquers perfectly well. Without primer, the pigments may be uneven or may flake off over time.
Is it suitable for large cosplay pieces?
It is one of the most popular materials for cosplay precisely because of its lightness. The most common technique involves building the interior volume with Ultralight and then applying a layer of Super Sculpey Beige or another material for the surface details. It also combines well with Worbla and other thermoplastics for the outer layers that require greater strength.
