What it's used for
This solution is designed for the finishing stage when sculpting with Monster Clay. It allows you to achieve clean, glossy, mark-free surfaces before moving on to the moulding process or final presentation of the piece. It is the go-to finishing tool for special effects, animatronics, character design and prototyping.
- Smooth out tool marks and fingerprints in Monster Clay
- Polish and refine transitions between planes of the sculpture
- Prepare the surface before taking a silicone mould
- Achieve a glossy, crystal-clear finish on smooth areas
- Clean up and recover damaged areas without removing material
- Professional finish on sculptures for FX, animatronics and concept art
How to use it
- Make sure the Monster Clay sculpture is at normal working temperature.
- Pour a small amount of solution into an auxiliary container. Do not work directly from the bottle to avoid contamination.
- Lightly load a soft brush or fold a sheet of kitchen paper with the solution.
- Apply with gentle circular motions on the areas you want to smooth or polish.
- On areas with fine detail, use the brush with less solution and shorter strokes to avoid losing definition.
- Allow the solution to evaporate completely before continuing to work on adjacent areas.
- Repeat the process until you achieve the desired level of finish.
Usage tips
Right amount: less is more
Always apply a small amount. Too much solution can over-soften the surface and blur details you've spent time achieving. It is better to apply several light passes than a single heavy one.
Clay temperature and evaporation time
If you are working in a cold environment, the solution will take a little longer to evaporate. In that case, wait the necessary time before applying a second coat or before taking the mould. A surface with solution still present can affect the adhesion of some moulding materials. If the clay is very warm from having used a heat gun, wait for it to cool down before applying the solution to avoid unintentional surface deformation.
Compatibility with the moulding process
Monster Clay Smoothing Solution integrates with the clay without altering its composition or reusability. However, if you are going to mould with platinum silicone, make sure the surface is completely dry and free of any residue before applying the moulding material. Platinum silicones are sensitive to certain contaminants: a clean surface ensures correct curing.
Frequently asked questions
Can this solution be used with any modelling clay?
It is formulated specifically for Monster Clay. Although its mineral oil base could interact with other clays, it has not been tested or recommended for other materials. To guarantee results, use it exclusively with Monster Clay in its different hardnesses (Soft, Medium, Hard).
Does it leave any residue on the surface of the sculpture?
No. Monster Clay Smoothing Solution evaporates completely without leaving any visible trace or greasy feel once dry. The surface is ready to work on, photograph or mould.
Does it affect fine details in the sculpture?
If applied in moderation and with a suitable brush, it does not affect details. Being an oil-based formula rather than an aggressive solvent, it acts in a gentler and more controlled way. The key is not to overload the brush and to respect evaporation times.
Is it safe to use indoors without special ventilation?
Yes. The product is non-toxic, odourless and contains no volatile solvents. It does not require forced ventilation or special protective equipment for normal use, although working in a well-ventilated space is always good workshop practice.
Can I mould in silicone directly after applying it?
Yes, as long as the solution has evaporated completely. If you are using platinum silicone, it is especially important to wait until the surface is completely dry, as addition silicones are sensitive to certain contaminants. With tin silicones the margin is greater, but the recommendation remains to let the surface dry thoroughly.
Can it be used to clean modelling tools?
It can help clean tools with Monster Clay residue, as the oil base softens and facilitates material removal. However, its primary use is oriented towards finishing the sculpture, not cleaning tools.
Does it affect Monster Clay reusability?
No. The solution integrates with the clay without modifying its properties or its capacity for reuse. Monster Clay can continue to be heated, sculpted and reused normally after using the smoothing solution.
What type of brush gives the best results?
Best results are achieved with soft, natural-hair brushes. Hard synthetic brushes can leave marks. For very large, smooth areas, a paper towel folded in several layers also works very well with circular motions.
