What it is used for

The AK183 is designed to seal and protect finished work whenever a completely matte result with no residual shine is required. It is especially useful in the final stages of the painting process, before or after applying pigments, filters and weathering effects.

  • Final sealing of scale military vehicle, aircraft and ship models
  • Protection of wargame miniatures (infantry, vehicles, creatures) after complete painting
  • Intermediate coat to fix washes and filters without interfering with subsequent steps
  • Base layer for applying powder pigments so they do not slip off
  • Final finish on dioramas and figures where shine would ruin realism
  • Protection of acrylic finishes on cosplay pieces or SFX props that require an opaque appearance

How to use it

  1. Preparation: Make sure the surface is completely dry and free of dust. Shake the bottle well for at least one minute before use.
  2. Thinning (airbrush): If you apply it with an airbrush, you can thin it slightly with distilled water or acrylic retarder for a more even application. Try a ratio of 10–15% water as a starting point.
  3. Application (brush): Using a flat, soft brush, apply thin, even coats and avoid going over the same area repeatedly to prevent lifting previous layers.
  4. Drying: Allow 30 to 60 minutes to dry under normal temperature and humidity conditions before handling the piece. For optimum protection, wait at least 24 hours before applying additional layers of effects or pigments.
  5. Cleanup: Clean the brush or airbrush immediately after use with running water.

Usage tips

Thin coats, always

Apply several thin coats rather than a single thick one. An overly thick coat can produce a slight whitish or "milky" effect when drying, especially on dark surfaces. Two or three light passes guarantee even, problem-free coverage.

Environmental conditions

Avoid applying the varnish in very high relative humidity or at temperatures below 15 °C. Under these conditions drying slows down and the risk of a milky finish increases. The ideal working range is 18–25 °C with humidity below 70%.

Order of the working process

If your workflow includes washes, filters and pigments, use the AK183 as an intermediate coat between each phase. This protects what has already been painted, provides a suitable grip surface for subsequent steps, and ensures the final result is completely matte and uniform.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be applied with an airbrush?

Yes. The Ultra Matte Varnish AK183 works perfectly with an airbrush. Thin it slightly with distilled water (10–15%) and work at a medium pressure of between 15 and 20 psi for even coverage without excessive overspray.

Does the matte varnish yellow over time?

The water-based acrylic formulation of the AK183 is designed to resist yellowing. As long as you store the finished pieces protected from direct ultraviolet light and in stable temperature conditions, the finish will remain neutral for years.

Can I apply powder pigments on top of the varnish?

Yes, and in fact it is one of its best uses. The ultra matte finish of the AK183 creates a slightly porous surface that holds powder pigments without the need for additional fixatives. It is the standard method for adding earth, dust and rust effects to military vehicle models and dioramas.

Is it compatible with acrylic paints and enamels?

The AK183 is fully compatible with water-based acrylic paints. If you apply it over enamel layers, make sure these are completely dry and cured (at least 24–48 hours) to avoid any reaction between coats.

How many coats are needed for adequate protection?

In most cases, two thin coats are sufficient to protect the piece against normal handling. If the piece will be subject to heavier wear (wargame miniatures that are constantly moved, cosplay pieces), a third coat adds protection without affecting the matte finish.

Where can I buy the Ultra Matte Varnish AK183 in Spain?
