What it is used for

This set is designed for any artist who needs total control over colour through manual mixing. By working with pure primary and secondary colours, you can create any shade with precision, applying the principles of colour theory directly on the palette.

  • Painting historical and fantasy figures in scale: uniforms, skin tones, fabrics and decorative elements.
  • Wargame miniatures: mixing custom colours for personalised armies with unique palettes.
  • Dioramas and scale vehicles: creating smooth chromatic transitions through layering.
  • Cosplay and SFX: painting on rigid surfaces (EVA, resin, latex) with colour mixes tailored to the design.
  • Illustration and art: direct use on paper, cardboard or canvas when a dense, mixable range is needed.
  • Colour learning and study: a practical reference for understanding subtractive mixing in any artistic discipline.

How to use it

  1. Prepare the surface: apply a suitable primer on the miniature, figure or piece. On porous surfaces, make sure they are clean and free of dust or grease.
  2. Prepare the mix: squeeze a small amount of paint onto a wet palette or ceramic palette. Mix the colours from the set with each other, or add white and black, to obtain the exact shade you need.
  3. Apply in thin layers: use a quality brush and apply thin coats. The dense formula allows you to work with opaque layers or dilute with water for glazes. Allow each layer to dry before applying the next.
  4. Work the blending: for smooth transitions, work wet-on-wet (wet blending) or apply progressive layers from shadow areas towards the highlights.
  5. Drying: touch-dry time is fast (15–30 minutes under normal conditions). For full adhesion, wait at least 1–2 hours before applying varnish or additional layers.
  6. Cleaning: clean brushes and tools with water while the paint is still fresh. Once dry, the paint is water-resistant, so immediate cleaning is important.

Usage tips

Colour theory in practice

With Cyan, Magenta and Yellow as primaries, and Orange, Green and Violet as secondaries, you have the complete colour wheel. Add white to lighten without losing saturation and black to darken with control. Before painting on the final piece, test your mixes on a palette or on a offcut of the same surface to verify the final result.

Layering with dense paint

The dense consistency of Artist Dense Acrylic is ideal for layering techniques. For highlight areas, mix the base colour with Yellow or with white in small proportions and gradually add thin layers until you reach the maximum illumination point. For shadows, Violet and the complementary colour of the base give far more natural results than pure black.

Tube storage

Close the tubes tightly after each use to prevent the paint from drying in the cap. If the tube opening becomes blocked, clean the excess with a damp cloth before closing. Store the tubes upright and away from direct heat sources to extend their shelf life.

Frequently asked questions

Can this type of paint be used with an airbrush?

The Artist Dense Acrylic formula of the AKAD102 is primarily intended for brush use. If you want to use it with an airbrush, you will need to thin it considerably with distilled water or a specific airbrush medium to achieve the right consistency. For continuous airbrush work, AK Interactive ranges specifically designed for that purpose offer better out-of-the-box results.

Is primer required before applying these paints?

On most surfaces — resin, plastic, metal, EVA foam — it is highly recommended to apply a primer beforehand to ensure adhesion. On paper or cardboard you can apply directly. Feroca stocks AK Interactive spray primers compatible with these colours.

Can the colours in the set be mixed with each other without compatibility issues?

Yes. Since all of them belong to the same Artist Dense Acrylic range by AK Interactive, the colours in the AKAD102 — Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Orange, Green and Violet — are fully compatible with each other and can be mixed in any proportion without chemical reaction issues or variation in drying.

How long does this paint take to dry?

To the touch, thin layers of Artist Dense Acrylic from the AKAD102 dry in approximately 15–30 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. To ensure full adhesion before varnishing or applying additional layers, it is recommended to wait between 1 and 2 hours.

Is it suitable for beginners or is it aimed at an advanced level?

AK Interactive recommends the AKAD102 for advanced painters, especially for layering techniques and manual colour mixing based on colour theory. If you are just starting out, you can still use it, but you will find it easier to work first with pre-mixed colours before exploring mixing from the primaries.
