What it is used for
Xtreme Metal Brass is designed for any application where you need to reproduce brass with a convincing and long-lasting metallic finish. Its high coverage and resistance make it suitable for both fine detail parts and larger surfaces:
- Brass details on military, naval and aeronautical scale models (cartridge cases, valves, fittings)
- Weaponry and accessories on wargame figures and miniatures, including projectiles, trigger guards and decorative ornaments
- Instrumentation and cockpit panels on scale aviation models
- Props and decorative elements in dioramas and miniature scenes
- Metallic details on cosplay pieces: buckles, rivets, ornamental plates
- Aged or polished metal effects in SFX and character makeup projects
- Decorative finishes on fantasy, steampunk and science fiction figures
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Clean the piece thoroughly to remove any grease, dust or mould release residue. As no primer is required, you can apply directly onto plastic, resin or metal, although a black primer will intensify the shine of the Brass finish.
- Shaking: Shake the bottle for at least 60 seconds before use. Metallic pigments tend to settle, so thorough shaking is key to achieving a uniform colour.
- Application: Apply with an airbrush for best results. Thin if necessary with the specific thinner for Xtreme Metal. Application with a soft-hair brush is also possible for small detail areas.
- Coats: A single coat is usually sufficient thanks to its high coverage. If you need greater intensity or uniformity, apply a second thin coat once the first has dried.
- Drying: Allow to dry completely before handling the piece or applying subsequent coats. Drying time varies depending on coat thickness and workspace ventilation.
- Varnishing: You can varnish over Brass without the finish losing its shine. Use a compatible gloss varnish to protect the piece and facilitate subsequent weathering applications.
- Cleaning: Clean the airbrush and brushes immediately after use with lacquer or nitro thinner. As it is solvent-based, water is not suitable for cleaning.
Usage tips
Black base for maximum shine
Although Brass does not require a mandatory primer, applying it over a deep black base greatly enhances the metallic effect. The darkness of the base coat allows the pigments to reflect light more dramatically, bringing the result closer to the look of real polished brass.
Thinning and airbrush pressure
For airbrush use, work at low pressures (between 15 and 20 psi) with moderate thinning. Applying thin, progressive coats prevents the paint from pooling and keeps the metallic effect uniform. Avoid excessive thinning, as it reduces opacity and shine intensity.
Combining with weathering effects
Brass responds very well to weathering techniques applied over varnish. You can use filters, washes and pigments to simulate oxidised, patinated or dirty brass. By varnishing before these techniques, the base metallic coat stays protected and you can clean up excess easily without damaging the colour layer.
Frequently asked questions
Is it necessary to use a primer before applying this metallic paint?
It is not strictly necessary. Xtreme Metal Brass (AK475) is formulated to adhere directly onto plastic, resin and metal without damaging the surface. However, applying a black primer beforehand notably improves the intensity and shine of the final finish.
Can I apply varnish over this paint without losing the metallic finish?
Yes. One of the advantages of Xtreme Metal Brass is that it accepts varnishing without altering its characteristic shine. Use a compatible gloss varnish to protect the piece and prepare the surface for subsequent weathering techniques.
What should I use to clean the airbrush after using this paint?
As it is a solvent-based paint, cleaning must be carried out with lacquer or nitro thinner. Water is not effective for removing Xtreme Metal Brass residue. Clean the airbrush and brushes immediately after finishing to prevent the paint from drying inside.
Can it be applied with a brush or only with an airbrush?
Although the airbrush delivers the best results with Xtreme Metal Brass, it can also be applied with a soft-hair brush for touch-ups or small detail areas. For larger surfaces, the airbrush guarantees a uniform coat and a more consistent finish.
Is this paint compatible with ageing and weathering techniques?
Yes. Xtreme Metal Brass has high weathering resistance. By varnishing the piece before applying washes, filters or pigments you can simulate aged, patinated or dirt-stained brass without compromising the base metallic coat.
