What it is used for

Pastel Violet is a versatile shade within the AK Interactive pastel range. Its soft, luminous character makes it especially useful for work that requires tonal delicacy and smooth transitions. It performs equally well with a brush or airbrush, and can be used for:

  • Historical and fantasy figure painting: highlights on fabrics, cloaks and armour with cool tones
  • Wargame miniatures: zenithal lighting and maximum highlight areas over dark colours
  • Dioramas and scenery: flowers, aged walls, dust effects with a violet hue
  • Vehicles and aircraft: panel desaturation and colour fading effects
  • Scale buildings and structures: surfaces with soft patinas and aged finishes
  • Cosplay and SFX: special effects make-up on resin or EVA foam pieces

How to use it

  1. Preparation: Shake the bottle well before use. The dropper cap dispenses the right amount onto the palette. If the paint has been sealed for a long time, check the consistency before applying.
  2. Thinning: For brush work, use it straight or thin it with a few drops of distilled water or acrylic retarder to improve flow. For airbrushing, add acrylic thinner until you reach the desired viscosity (generally between 20 and 40% thinner).
  3. Application: Apply in thin layers and allow to dry between coats. Pastel Violet gains depth with several light layers rather than a single thick one.
  4. Drying: At room temperature it is touch-dry in 15–20 minutes. To speed up drying, use gentle warm air.
  5. Cleaning: Clean brushes and airbrush with plenty of water immediately after use. If the paint has dried inside the airbrush, use a dedicated acrylic cleaner.

Tips and advice

Mixing and tonal combinations

Pastel Violet mixes directly with any other paint in the AK Interactive Standard range. Adding it to a darker tone gives you the final highlight of that colour with a cool, soft bias, perfect for fantasy lighting or magical effects on miniatures. It also works as a maximum-diluted transparent glaze to unify areas with too much contrast.

Highlighting and zenithal lighting

In zenithal highlighting technique (airbrushing from above), Pastel Violet is ideal as a final light layer over more saturated or cool bases. You can also use it with drybrushing on textured surfaces — stone, wood or fabric scenery — to add that touch of brightness without losing any texture detail.

Glazes and transparencies

Thinned with plenty of water or glazing medium, Pastel Violet acts as a soft colour lacquer. It is very useful for "cooling down" flesh areas or light surfaces, and for adding a differentiated colour temperature to shadows or diorama backgrounds.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used straight without thinning?

Yes. Pastel Violet has the right viscosity to be applied with a brush straight from the bottle, although for airbrushing or glazes it is recommended to thin it for better flow and opacity control.

How many coats do I need for solid coverage?

Pastel tones are by definition more transparent than saturated colours. For full coverage over dark backgrounds, apply between 2 and 3 thin coats allowing each to dry in between. Over white or light grey backgrounds, one or two coats may be sufficient.

Is it compatible with water-based primers and varnishes?

Yes. Pastel Violet is fully compatible with AK Interactive primers and varnishes. It is always recommended to seal the finished piece with a matt or satin varnish to protect your work.

Can I mix it with other paints in the Standard range?

Absolutely. All AK Interactive Standard paints are fully miscible with each other, allowing you to create intermediate tones and customise your palette with complete freedom.

How long does it take to dry completely?

Under normal temperature and humidity conditions, Pastel Violet is touch-dry in around 15–20 minutes. Full curing, which ensures maximum resistance before applying additional layers or varnish, is reached in approximately 24 hours.

Where can I buy this paint in Spain?

Pastel Violet (AK11069) is available at Feroca, official distributor of AK Interactive in Spain, both through the online shop and via its distribution network to specialist modelling and wargame stores.
