What it is used for

The Brown Rose shade fits into a wide variety of modelling and artistic painting projects. It is a warm colour that sits between a muted brown and an earthy pink, ideal for skin tones, aged leathers, or organic elements with a natural appearance.

  • Painting flesh tones and skin areas on fantasy, historical, or wargame miniatures (Warhammer, etc.)
  • Base or intermediate coats for scale figures with dark or Mediterranean skin tones
  • Leathers, fabrics, and organic materials on military vehicle models and dioramas
  • Modelling and shading of faces and limbs on large-scale figures
  • Custom mixes to create warmer or cooler skin tones
  • Use in cosplay and SFX projects where a base tone is needed for skin effects or painted soft materials

How to use it

  1. Surface preparation: Make sure the piece is clean, dry, and has a coat of primer applied. For plastic or resin miniatures, a grey or white primer will allow Brown Rose to show its true colour.
  2. Shaking: Shake the bottle well before use. The Standard range includes an agitator ball; give it at least 30 seconds of vigorous shaking.
  3. Thinning: For brush application, you can apply directly or thin slightly with water (5–15%). For airbrush, thin until you achieve a semi-skimmed milk consistency; start with 20–30% water and adjust according to pressure and nozzle size.
  4. Application: Apply in thin, progressive coats. The high pigmentation of Brown Rose allows for good coverage, but thin coats prevent loss of detail on raised areas and textures.
  5. Drying: Touch-dry time is quick (10–20 minutes under normal conditions). Wait at least 30 minutes between coats to ensure proper adhesion.
  6. Cleaning: Clean the brush or airbrush with lukewarm water immediately after use. If paint has dried in the nozzle, use isopropyl alcohol.

Usage tips

Skin mixes and transitions

Brown Rose works very well as a base colour for dark or Mediterranean skin tones before applying highlights. Mix it with lighter shades from the Standard range to achieve smooth transitions, or add a few drops to cooler skin colours to warm them up without over-saturating them.

Washes and shading

By thinning it heavily with water (a 1:5 ratio or more), you can use it as a homemade wash to accentuate shadows in skin or leather areas. Apply it in recessed areas and let it flow by capillary action into the negative details. For greater control, combine it with AK Interactive's retarder medium.

Storage and preservation

Store the bottle upright, tightly sealed, and away from heat sources and direct light. If you notice the paint has thickened between uses, add one or two drops of water and shake again before applying. Do not store a paint-soaked brush inside the bottle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this paint directly without a primer?

Technically yes, but it is not recommended. Brown Rose, like any Standard acrylic paint from AK Interactive, adheres much better over a primed surface. Without primer, the paint may peel off with handling or when applying subsequent layers of varnish or washes.

Is it compatible with an airbrush?

Yes. The Standard range from AK Interactive is formulated for use with both brush and airbrush. Simply thin Brown Rose with distilled water or AK Interactive's acrylic thinner until you reach the right viscosity for your nozzle and working pressure.

How long does it take to dry completely?

Brown Rose is touch-dry in about 10–20 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. For a full cure — which allows you to apply varnish coats or washes without risk of reactivating the paint — it is best to wait between 12 and 24 hours.

Can it be mixed with other paints from the same range?

Yes, all paints in the AK Interactive Standard range are compatible with each other. You can mix Brown Rose with other colours from the line to create custom shades. Mixing is straightforward and the results are predictable thanks to the consistent formulation of the range.

Do I need to varnish the piece after painting?

It depends on the finish you are looking for and how the piece will be used. For wargame miniatures or pieces that are handled frequently, applying a protective varnish coat is recommended. AK Interactive offers varnishes in both spray and bottle form for all types of finishes.
