What it is used for
The Light Skin tone is a light flesh colour with multiple applications across different modelling and artistic painting disciplines. Its satin finish and high coverage make it particularly versatile:
- Painting skin areas on wargame figures (Warhammer and similar) and scale miniatures.
- Base colour or highlight tone on faces and bare parts of historical, fantasy or sci-fi figures.
- Quick sketching and marking highlight areas on dioramas with figures.
- Touching up cosplay pieces and props with plastic, resin or wood surfaces.
- Makeup and SFX applications on porous or plastic materials.
- Fine detail work on military vehicle models featuring crew or passenger figures.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Clean the piece thoroughly and apply a white primer. AK Interactive recommends using a white undercoat before applying Playmarkers to achieve maximum coverage and colour accuracy for Light Skin.
- Shake the marker: Before use, shake the marker for a few seconds with the cap on to homogenise the paint inside.
- Prime the tip: With the cap off, gently press the tip against a disposable surface until the paint flows evenly through the felt tip.
- Application: Paint directly onto the piece with controlled strokes. The brush-style tip allows you to work both large areas and fine details. You can apply multiple coats for greater coverage, allowing each one to dry in between.
- Blending and mixing: While the paint is still wet, you can blend edges with a brush slightly dampened with water to achieve smooth transitions.
- Drying: Drying is fast. Wait until the coat is completely dry before applying weathering effects, washes or varnishes.
- Cleaning: Clean the tip with an absorbent paper if you change colour. If you need to replace the tip, remove it with tweezers and fit a new one.
Usage tips
White primer as a base
Although the Playmarker Light Skin has high coverage, starting from a white primer is key to ensuring the warm skin tone appears true to colour. On dark, unprimed surfaces the colour may look altered and lose its luminosity.
Thin coats for skin transitions
Applying several thin coats instead of a single thick one will allow you to work the transitions between shadows and highlights on faces and hands more effectively. Between coats, a brush dampened with water helps to soften edges without lifting the already dry paint.
Compatible with weathering and varnishes
Once dry, the paint has no trouble withstanding AK Interactive weathering products (washes, pigments, dust effects) and any type of varnish, whether matt, satin or gloss. This makes it ideal for integrating into complete figure painting workflows without fear of lifting the base colour.
Frequently asked questions
Can the paint in the marker be thinned with water?
Yes. The water-based acrylic paint in the Playmarker Light Skin is compatible with water. You can use a slightly damp brush on freshly applied paint to blend or lighten areas, integrating it seamlessly into traditional wet techniques.
Does this type of marker work on resin and metal?
Yes. The acrylic formula of the Playmarkers is designed to adhere to plastic, resin, metal and wood. For metal and resin, it is especially recommended to apply a primer beforehand to maximise adhesion and prevent chipping.
Can I use these markers with an airbrush?
No. Playmarkers are formulated for direct application with their felt tip or with a brush. They are not designed for use with an airbrush. If you need the Light Skin colour for airbrushing, check out the AK Interactive Standard acrylic paint range.
Is the finish matt or satin?
The finish of the Playmarker Light Skin is satin, due to the nature of its pigments. If you prefer a matt or gloss finish, you can apply the appropriate varnish without any issues once the paint is completely dry.
