How to use it

  1. Shake the can for a few seconds before use to homogenise the formula.
  2. Aim the spray at the area you want to stain: skin, clothing, accessory or prosthesis.
  3. For fine, dispersed splatter, hold the can about 20–30 cm from the surface and press in short bursts.
  4. For thick drops and drips, bring the spray closer to about 5–10 cm and apply in a more concentrated manner.
  5. Allow it to drip naturally if you want an active bleeding effect, or partially dry it with air if you prefer a drier but still visible finish.
  6. For mouth use, apply a small amount directly onto the tongue or inside the lips and allow it to flow naturally.
  7. To remove the product from skin, wash with soap and water. On clothing, treat the stain in cold water as soon as possible.

Usage tips

Control viscosity according to temperature

The corn syrup-based formula tends to flow faster with heat. If you are working on a set with powerful lights or outdoors in summer, the dripping will be more pronounced. In cold environments the blood stays more in place, which makes it easier to recreate dry or coagulated wounds. Adjust the application distance and quantity according to shooting conditions.

Combine it with other blood products for greater realism

The spray is ideal for the first layer and for background splatter. To add depth and areas of coagulated or dried blood, complement it with denser blood gels applied with a spatula or brush directly onto the prosthesis or skin. Combining different textures and finishes gives a much more convincing result on camera.

Protect surfaces you do not want to stain

Being a spray, the product can settle outside the desired area. Cover with plastic or paper any nearby surface that should not be stained: background clothing, set floor, camera. Outdoors, be aware of wind direction. For the actor, protect the hair with a towel or cap if it is not part of the effect.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to apply directly in the mouth?

Yes. Ben Nye Spray Blood is formulated with a corn syrup base and is safe for mouth use. It also has a mint flavour, which makes the experience more comfortable for the actor or model.

Can it be used on silicone or latex prostheses?

Yes. The spray adheres well to skin silicone, latex, foam latex and other common SFX prosthesis materials. Apply over the prosthesis once it is placed and made up for the final touch of active blood.

Does it permanently stain clothing?

The corn syrup base can leave stains on textiles if not treated promptly. Wash the garment in cold water as soon as possible; avoid hot water as it can set the stain. For prop clothing that needs to look permanently bloodied, the product also works as a dye if left to dry without washing.

How long does the effect last without touch-ups?

On skin, the active drip effect lasts while the product is wet, generally several minutes depending on temperature. Once it partially dries, it maintains the appearance of coagulated blood. For longer shoots it may be necessary to reapply between takes.

Can it be mixed with other products to change the tone?

Yes, you can add a few drops of dark food colouring (black or brown) to achieve a darker or more venous blood tone. Mix in a separate container before use so as not to alter the original bottle.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin or those with a latex allergy?

Ben Nye Spray Blood does not contain latex in its formula. Even so, if you have very sensitive skin, always perform a patch test on a small area before extensive application. If any irritation occurs, remove the product with soap and water.

How do I achieve a more dramatic splatter effect?

Move the can back to about 30–40 cm, shake vigorously and press the spray in quick bursts. To simulate a blood impact or explosion, you can spray onto an intermediate surface (the palm of your hand, for example) and let it bounce off, or use the spray directly onto the background set while the actor is already in character.

What is the difference between using a spray and a gel or liquid blood applied with a brush?

The spray allows for quick application, with organic splatter and wide coverage in seconds, making it ideal for the chaos of an action scene or for touch-ups between takes. Gels or liquid bloods applied with a brush offer greater control in specific areas, such as the edge of a wound or the interior of a prosthesis. The optimal approach is to combine both formats.
