silicona is a material with many uses. One of them is creating reproductions of figures using molds made from this same material.

You can create things like costume jewelry, soaps, candles, anime figures, and all kinds of crafts you can imagine. Plus, they are very durable and have non-stick properties.

In this article you'll find a guide and a video tutorial showing you the two-part silicone mold process step by step.

Materials for making a two-part silicone mold

Before getting into the step-by-step process, it's important to know all the materials you'll need to create the most original molds. The materials you need are:

  • Feroca Silastic 3481 silicona. It's perfect for this type of mold. The composition and properties of this silicona allow pours with different materials such as polyurethane resin, polyester resin, various types of acrylic resins, plasters, gypsum, waxes, and epoxy. At Feroca you can find silicona for molds

  • 350 grams of industrial plastilina.

  • A Ferosil V32 release agent spray.

  • Epofer putty. Applied in a more or less conical shape, it will make it easier to pour the resin once the mold is complete.

  • Building blocks. To form the walls of the container holding the silicona.

  • A brush. To apply the release agent.

  • Modeling tools and implements.

How to make a two-part silicone mold

1. The first step is to take two portions of Epofer putty

The first step is to take two portions of Epofer putty and mix them together to form the piece. This putty is very easy to work with for creating anything you like.

2. Apply the release agent

Next, apply the release agent to the area where the putty will be placed to prevent it from sticking too much to the plastilina bed, which is the next step.

To build this, shape it using your modeling tool. On top of it, press the piece you want to copy, sinking it in roughly halfway. This will determine the parting line during the next stage of the process.

3. Seal all the plastilina buildup thoroughly

Now seal all the plastilina buildup around the piece thoroughly to prevent silicona from leaking. Gradually seal the entire perimeter, defining the exact halfway point of the piece.

This plastilina can be used with tin silicones, but not platinum ones, as it contains sulfides that can inhibit them.

Around the piece, make a series of shallow marks using a suitable tool. In this case, use the end of a pencil, which gives a roughly hexagonal shape. In the same way, mark a perimeter channel around the edges of the plastilina bed.

All these holes and the channel itself will help both halves of the silicona fit together and seal perfectly when pouring the resin.

4. Use blocks of different shapes and sizes

To build a two-part mold, you'll need children's building blocks in different shapes and sizes.

Using these pieces, assemble the walls of what will be the silicona container, which will determine the outer shape of the mold.

5. Apply the release agent over the plastilina

Next, apply the Ferosil V32 release agent over the plastilina. Given the release properties of Silastic 3481 silicona, it's not necessary to apply it directly to the piece.

Then, mix the silicona. For this step, follow the instructions provided by Feroca both on our website and on the packaging of each of our products.

The measurements and proportions must be carefully adjusted. In this case, you need 800 grams of silicona and the corresponding amount of catalyst, which is 40 grams.

6. Mix and stir thoroughly

Mix the catalyst with the silicona and stir thoroughly with a suitable tool until both components are perfectly combined. Once mixed, the working time for the silicona is 45 minutes. Pour the silicona into the mold container.

The correct way to pour it is to let it fall from a certain height to break any bubbles, and then, starting from one corner, slowly cover the piece in a steady, unhurried manner. Patiently fill the container without creating bubbles. Once the piece is completely covered, wait 24 hours for it to cure.

7. Wait 24 hours and disassemble the structure

After 24 hours, disassemble the building block structure. Remove the plastilina until the first face of the mold is visible. As you remove the plastilina, you'll be able to see how the holes and channel made earlier stand out, creating a raised edge that will help you fit both faces of the mold together perfectly.

Using the same formwork as before, apply the Ferosil V32 release agent to seal the joints between pieces and prevent silicona from leaking. It will also help slide the first silicona layer of the mold to the base of the formwork.

Then, apply the release agent over the entire silicona surface, because if any area is left uncovered, the silicona you're about to pour will cure as one inseparable piece with the previous face.

For the mix, use the same measurements as before: 800 grams of silicona and 40 grams of catalyst. Follow the same mixing process and pour it over the piece, taking care to break any air bubbles. Once this second pour is complete, wait another 24 hours for it to fully cure.

8. Remove the walls to release the silicone mold

Once that time has passed, remove the container walls to finally release the silicona mold. Thanks to the release agent, you can easily separate both halves of the mold. With these two mold halves, you'll have a copy of whichever piece you want to reproduce.
