In this Feroca article we're going to talk about how to make a torso mold for Halloween. Two materials can be used for this: alginato or silicona. In today's article we'll focus on alginato for making Halloween molds.

If you want to impress everyone this Halloween, the best way to do it is with a terrifying alginato torso.

A torso mold for Halloween has countless possible uses. You can place it in the garden to scare your neighbors, sticking out of a trash can or a bucket. You can create truly chilling torso molds of corpses that will leave your family and friends speechless...

Plus, a body mold for Halloween doesn't just have to go outside or inside your home — you can also wear it yourself and build a mask or make it look like you have a wound.

People usually resort to face painting at Halloween, but alginato and full torso molds offer so many more possibilities for creating something truly creepy.

Alginato as a material for making a torso mold for Halloween

What should you keep in mind?

  • When it comes to alginato, there are two specific types: fast and slow. The fast one sets in just three to five minutes.

However, if it's your first time making a torso mold for Halloween, it's recommended that you use a slower alginato.
At Feroca we also offer one with a 10–15 minute working time, which we recommend for beginners with this type of mold, as it gives you more time to work calmly.

  • It's also important to keep in mind that you should use cold water, not hot, since hot water will significantly reduce the working time of the alginato.
  • Similarly, if the person you're applying the alginato to is wearing earrings, it's a good idea to seal them before you start so the alginato doesn't get in.

You can seal them with plasticine and place a small piece of cotton in the ear to act as a little plug so no alginato gets inside the ear when making your Halloween mold.

  • The alginatos are specially formulated for skin contact, however before applying it to the person in question, it's important to protect their hair.

To cover and protect the hair so it doesn't get product on it, you can use a swimming cap or a calota, like the ones available on our website. Although alginato doesn't stick to hair, it's still important to protect the area.

If the person you're applying it to has a beard, a calota or swimming cap won't be necessary — a little bit of Vaseline will be enough to smooth it down and prevent anything from seeping through.

To completely seal the calota to the skin you can use a special skin adhesive so that everything stays perfectly in place when making the Halloween mold without being harmful on topical contact.

How to make a torso mold for Halloween, step by step

The first step in making a torso mold for Halloween with alginato is to prepare your materials.

For a simpler technique, we recommend starting with the back. Apply the alginato and use plaster bandages to create a counter-mold, then move on to the front.

  1. Preparing the alginato: to prepare the alginato, a ratio of 3:1 or 2:1 is recommended, but the proportion can vary. That is, you could use three parts water to one part alginato, or two parts water to one part alginato — you can play with the proportions depending on what you want to achieve or how much surface area you need to cover. For Halloween torso molds, you want the alginato to be a little thicker so you have enough time to apply it correctly, so you may find it more useful to use more product than water. Add the alginato first and then add the water until you reach the consistency you want.

  1. Applying the prepared alginato: once you've got your alginato mix at the consistency you want, keep in mind the working time so you have everything ready before the product sets. That's why it's important to mix the product well so there are no lumps before you start applying it. As mentioned earlier, start with just one half of the torso, beginning with the back.

Aplicación de alginato en el cuerpo

  1. Building the counter-mold: once you've applied the alginato to the back of the torso, you'll need to make a counter-mold using plaster bandages and warm water. Feroca recommends using warm water, as this will help the plaster bandages set faster.

The plaster bandages available at Feroca are ideal for making counter-molds for Halloween torso molds, as they are large and thick. When cutting the bandage, we recommend cutting it double, as this means you'll need to apply fewer layers and the process will be faster.

Before making the counter-mold, use metal or wooden spatulas to trim the edges where any product may have overflowed slightly. This will ensure the front of the mold fits snugly and looks realistic. Applying some release Vaseline to the edges of the alginato will ensure it doesn't stick, so when you come to demold everything it comes out cleanly and smoothly.

Once that's done, making the counter-mold is very straightforward — simply dip the bandages in warm water, wring them out well and apply them over the alginato area. The bandages are applied right up to the edge where you previously trimmed the alginato to remove any excess product. At this stage it's also a good idea to add a small reinforcing strip from top to bottom to add strength.

  1. Repeating the process on the front: once you have the alginato layer and the bandage layer done, you'll need to repeat the same process on the front of the face and torso. The person whose mold you're making should keep their eyes closed, and you'll need to pay special attention to the nose area, making sure the alginato doesn't get inside the nostrils. You can place some straws to make breathing easier.

On the front you'll need to use double the amount of alginato compared to the back, as the surface area to cover will be larger. To give your Halloween mold a more eerie, ghostly look, you can agree with your model that they won't smile or will hold a particular facial expression (always with eyes closed) — this will give your mold greater realism and believability, while keeping that sinister Halloween feel.

Once the alginato has been applied to the front, you'll need to make the plaster counter-mold just as you did for the back.

  1. Demolding and result: one tip from Feroca is to ask your model to make facial expressions during the demolding process, as this will help everything come out more easily. Once you've demolded the mold along with the counter-mold, it's time to make the copy. At Feroca we recommend our Monster Clay plastilina, which can be melted and is perfect for brushing onto the mold to create your copies of this Halloween torso mold.
