Materials needed
To start making our fake fingers, you'll need to gather a few materials: alginato suitable for the human body, flesh-coloured EASYPLAT silicona, silicona adhesive, plastic cups for mixing, a brush to decorate your finger, and red and black pigment to give your creation a more realistic look.
What is alginato
Alginato is a material suitable for making single-use moulds of human body parts without damaging them.
We recommend these two versions:
- A fast version, for professionals and quick face moulds: Alga-Cast Fast. It has a cure time of 3 to 4 minutes depending on the water temperature.
- The other version is Alga-Cast Slow. Designed for beginners, courses, children's classes… It has a longer cure time window of around 9 to 12 minutes. For making our fake fingers, we'll be using this type of material.
As for this last one, Feroca's alginato for moulds is a perfect moulding material for making temporary moulds of the face, hands, and other human body parts. This material captures detail at levels no other alginato has achieved before, so your fingers will look incredibly realistic.
Alga-Cast Slow is easy to use and will give you a perfect mould in just a few moments. It works for one or two pours at most, depending on the material being cast.
What is Easyplat silicona
EASYPLAT (in any of its versions) is a two-component platinum catalyst (addition) silicona. The product can be translucent (EASYPLAT 00-30) or flesh-coloured, which is what we'll be using for our new Halloween creation, and it becomes an extremely soft and flexible elastomer after curing.
EASYPLAT is used mainly for FX moulds, animatronics, prosthetic applications, Reborn dolls, hyper-realistic replicas, silicona masks, etc.
EASYPLAT produces moulds and pieces that can be used for a very long time while always maintaining the softness of the silicona. They are also characterised by excellent electrical performance, as well as chemical stability, water resistance, anti-corrosion properties, non-toxicity, ageing resistance, easy pouring, ease of use, and complete vulcanisation. It can meet the requirements for mechanical strength even at very low hardness levels.
There are materials that must not be mixed with this substance, such as water, impurities, organic tin catalysts, acids, alkalis, and other compounds containing sulphur, phosphorus, and nitrogen. All of these affect the vulcanisation of the silicona rubber, potentially causing inhibition and malfunction.
What is silicona adhesive
DC 734 silicona is a transparent single-component product that works as an adhesive. It can be used to repair broken moulds or to fix silicona pieces such as masks or prosthetics. Being more fluid than DC 732, the 734 is ideal for painting silicona, as we'll show you throughout this article. By thinning it with naphtha or hexane and adding pigment, you can paint any type of already-cured silicona, whether tin or platinum based.
Step-by-step guide to creating fake fingers for Halloween
Mould
- First, mix one part alginato with three parts water.
- Once mixed, insert your finger and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
- When you can feel it's properly cured and has a jelly-like consistency, remove your finger very carefully.
Casting
- Pour equal parts of the Easyplat Flesh mixture into a cup, stir, and pour into the alginato mould, filling the cavity left by the shape of your finger.
With Easyplat Flesh silicona you'll have a working time of 30 minutes. It comes in a flesh colour.
- To make it look more realistic, you can split half a chicken bone and insert it into the mixture.
- Once the cure time is up (five to six hours), you can remove the silicona finger from the mould.
Final details to make it hyper-realistic
- For the blood on the finger, take some silicona adhesive and colour it with red and black pigment paste. If it's too thick, you can thin it with a little naphtha.
- Using a brush, carefully apply this mixture around the finger and, once everything has dried, your creation will be ready.
