How do you get started with polymer clay?

1. First of all, you need to shape the polymer clay. For example, if you want to make a character, start by taking a small amount of material, rounding it and shaping the head. Once the head is ready, repeat the process with a portion of material three times larger than the head to create the body. To shape the body, it's best to stretch the ball slightly so it's not perfectly round, which will give you the neck effect.

A tip from Feroca when working with white polymer clay is that you should make sure your work area is as clean as possible, as it is a material that gets dirty easily. However, if you work on a clean surface you won't have any problems.

2. Join the pieces: once you have the top and bottom parts shaped as desired, it's time to join both pieces together and continue refining their shape as a single unit. Depending on which direction you want your polymer clay toy to face, you'll need to orient the head accordingly.

3. The back of our toy: once you've assembled the parts that will form the head and body of the toy, it's time to shape the feet or legs, if you're creating an animal.

If you're making a pin or brooch, you don't need to pay as much attention to the back or legs. In fact, it's preferable that they don't have too much volume and remain flatter so they sit properly on the garment where you'll be placing them.

If, on the other hand, you're making a polymer clay toy that needs to stand on its own, you'll need to pay greater attention to the legs or feet, as these will be the support that keeps it upright. Once the back is ready, attach it right at the edge of the rear of your polymer clay toy's body.

4. Use a sculpting tool to shape it: once you have all the parts of the toy joined together, use a sculpting tool to shape it.
