What it is used for
Dye Plat Fantasy are designed for any application where you need to colour silicone uniformly, intensely and durably. They are especially popular in the world of special effects and character makeup, but are also useful in any workshop working with coloured silicone moulds.
- Prosthetic makeup pieces (noses, ears, scars, creatures)
- Theatre and film character makeup
- Cosplay accessories and silicone pieces
- Fantasy dolls and figures with pigmented silicone
- Intrinsic colouring of silicone skins and encapsulations
- Colour mixing to achieve custom skin or fantasy shades
- Controlled translucency effects combined with pigments in different proportions
How to use it
- Prepare the amount of silicone you need (both component A and component B, in the ratio indicated by your chosen silicone).
- Add the Dye Plat Fantasy to component A before mixing with the hardener. This ensures uniform colour dispersion.
- Start with 1–2 drops per 100 g of silicone and adjust according to the desired colour intensity. The high concentration means a small amount goes a long way.
- Mix thoroughly until you achieve a homogeneous colour with no streaks.
- Add component B and mix following the instructions of the base silicone.
- Apply or pour into the mould following your usual working process with your silicone.
- You can combine several Dye Plat Fantasy colours together to create custom shades before mixing with the hardener.
Usage tips
Start with a small amount of pigment
The high concentration of Dye Plat Fantasy is their main advantage, but it can catch you off guard if you add too much at once. Add the pigment drop by drop and evaluate the colour in a small amount of silicone before pigmenting the entire batch. Keep in mind that the colour may look slightly different once the silicone has cured compared to its liquid state.
Colour mixing for skin tones and effects
You can combine different colours from the Dye Plat Fantasy range to achieve realistic skin tones or unique fantasy effects. Work with a small palette of uncatalysed liquid silicone to test mixes before committing the full batch. Note down the proportions used so you can replicate the result in subsequent runs.
Compatibility with Flocking for advanced textures
For pieces with skin or fur-type surface texture, combine Dye Plat Fantasy with white flocking fibres or coloured fibres from the Titanic Fx range. White Flocking lets the pigment colour take centre stage, while coloured flockings add additional nuances. This combination is common in high-end FX prosthetics.
Frequently asked questions
Are these pigments safe for skin use?
Dye Plat Fantasy are formulated to colour silicone, which in many cases is used in contact with the skin in FX and character makeup applications. However, suitability for dermal contact also depends on the base silicone you use. Always check the technical data sheet of your chosen silicone and perform a patch test before applying to sensitive skin or for extended periods.
How much pigment do I need to colour silicone?
Thanks to their high concentration, 1–2 drops per 100 g of silicone already produce visible colour. For intense or opaque shades, you can go up to 4–6 drops, but it will rarely be necessary to exceed that amount. This means a 20 g container lasts a long time even in intensive professional use.
Can I use these pigments with any silicone?
Dye Plat Fantasy are compatible with both platinum silicones and tin silicones. They are pigments specifically formulated not to alter the curing properties or physical characteristics of the resulting elastomer, as long as they are used in the recommended proportions.
Can the pigment be mixed with component B (hardener)?
It is preferable to incorporate the pigment into component A before adding the hardener. This ensures a more homogeneous colour distribution and reduces the risk of the pigment interfering with the curing reaction. Once well dispersed in component A, add component B and mix as normal.
Can colours be mixed together to obtain custom shades?
Yes. The colours in the Dye Plat Fantasy range are fully miscible with each other. You can combine them in whatever proportion you need to create any shade, from realistic skin colours to more extreme fantasy effects. It is recommended to test in small quantities and note down the proportions to ensure repeatability.
Does the pigment affect working time or silicone curing?
When used in the recommended proportions, Dye Plat Fantasy does not significantly alter the working time or curing time of the base silicone. If added in excessive amounts, minor variations may occur, so it is recommended not to exceed the suggested doses and always run a test before production.
Does the colour vary between the liquid state and after curing?
It is common for the colour perceived in the liquid silicone to differ slightly from the final colour once cured, especially in translucent silicones. The shade may lighten or shift on curing. It is always advisable to make a small cured sample before finalising the colour formulation.
Are they available in kit format for those who need several colours?
Yes. In addition to individual 20 g containers, Dye Plat Fantasy are available in 6-unit kits, which is very practical for professionals who need to work with a wide palette or for those who want to try different colours before deciding which ones they will use regularly.
