How to work with epoxy putty on glass

When working with epoxy putty, it's advisable to use gloves to make mixing and applying the adhesive easier and to achieve smoother surfaces.

When working with this type of material, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Gather your materials. It can be very helpful to have tools on hand such as knives, sandpaper or a steel brush, gloves and a damp cloth.
  2. Safety first. Use gloves and wash your hands after applying the epoxy putty.
  3. Prepare your work area. Make sure the surfaces are clean and dry, free from dust, oils or any other substances. For better adhesion to your piece, you can sand any smooth parts or use a steel brush.
  4. Using the epoxy putty. Each manufacturer has their own instructions. At Feroca, we show them to you step by step on our packaging so you always have them to hand and can follow them without any hassle.
  5. Using the putty as an adhesive. Here we'll show you how to bond epoxy putty on glass. What you need to do is place the necessary amount of putty between the parts you're joining and press firmly. If the surfaces are damp or wet, hold the pieces together to ensure a strong bond.
  6. Prepare the mix. For Feroca's epoxy putty, take equal parts of each component and knead by hand until you get a uniform, evenly coloured mixture. When using the putty as an adhesive, mould a piece of the product with your hands to give it the shape you need. Apply it to the piece and press firmly.
  7. A good finish. Before it dries, gently rub the putty with a damp cloth. Check the instructions to find out how long you need to wait before sanding, drilling or painting the epoxy putty.
  8. Final clean-up. Remove any putty residue with a blade or spatula before it dries completely.

Step-by-step guide to decorating glass with epoxy putty

As we mentioned earlier, epoxy putty has a wide range of uses.

Here are just a few ideas of what you can create:

  • Different types of jewellery and accessories.
  • Small figurines of characters from various themes, such as the immaterial horror beings of the Cthulhu Mythos from Lovecraft's stories.
  • Personalizing glass items such as bottles, glasses, jugs, etc.
  • Notebook or book covers.
  • And much more.

Now, let's look at an example:

Decorating tableware with epoxy putty tentacle effect

  • First and foremost, the most important thing is to clean the surface thoroughly. For this we recommend isopropyl alcohol. This is a solvent that cleans any surface very effectively, leaves no residue and evaporates quickly. In this case, we also use this type of alcohol to clean tools, smooth surfaces or create textures.
  • The design we'll use to decorate the glass will be in the shape of tentacles, as if an octopus were gripping it from the bottom.
  • To do this, you'll need to model the tentacles with your hands — remember to use latex gloves — and place them on the glass (jug, glass, shot glass, etc.). Layer them on top of each other so that it looks like an octopus.

  • To add detail to the tentacles and make them look less like grass or roots, you'll need to model small circles to act as suckers and attach them to the tentacles. Press into each circle with the help of a stylus and it will look much more realistic.

  • Once it's dry, you can apply a coat of bitumen of Judea for a more realistic effect and, if you like, paint it however you choose. You can create all kinds of elements and you'll see how the epoxy putty won't come off.

Using epoxy putty on glass for restoration

Another use of epoxy putty is its ability to restore any type of glass. First of all, you should follow the steps mentioned above in this article before you start working.

With all your materials ready, the first thing to do is sand the entire surface you want to restore. With the epoxy putty, model over the shape you want your repaired object to take, as if you were creating a new element.

You can use any tool to give it the look you want.

Once you have the shape ready, apply it to the surface. Make sure the broken or damaged part is well covered by the adhesive so it doesn't get damaged again.

Once it's dry, you can apply a coat of paint as needed and your piece will be fully restored.
