How to Make Bases for Board Game Miniatures Step by Step

Tutorial for making your own bases for miniatures

Basic materials for making our base

To make our base, we'll need to gather just a few simple materials. Here's what you'll need:

• The mini, of course. In this case Phil, from Zombicide Season.

• A little of our Epoxy putty.

• Vallejo Game Color acrylic paints, ideal for gaming figures, as their formula includes a resin that offers extraordinary friction resistance.

• Decorative elements, such as bricks, sticks, tubes, etc. Let your imagination run wild — we're going to make a post-apocalyptic base!

Step-by-step guide to making a custom base for a board game

• Take a ball of each part of our Epoxy putty of the same size and mix them together.

For this step we recommend wearing gloves, as the putty can stick to your hands a little. Our powder-free nitrile gloves could be just what you need.

• Once it's mixed and has a uniform colour, make a small mound and shape it.

Bear in mind that the mini needs a space to rest on.

• Cover the mini's base with cling film to protect it, then press it down to leave the desired shape.

• Cover the remaining surface with bricks, sticks, tubes, or any other material you've chosen to personalise your base.

In this case, we've used a tube to act as a broken pipe, bricks, and a couple of sticks as beams. This will be a piece of a destroyed building — who knows if it was taken out by a souped-up car, a missile, or an abomination. We'll have to watch out!

• Once you have the shape you want, and before the putty dries, sprinkle some beach sand on top to create a dirt effect and press it down gently so it sticks.

• Once dry, paint it with Vallejo Game Color acrylic paints, or if you like, you can break a brick, glue on more details with cyanoacrylate, etc.

• Once painted, mix a little Epofer EpoDoming and tint it with piñata alcohol inks to make it look like waste or water coming out of the pipe.

• Once dry, Phil will be all set to hunt walkers.
