You may have heard about fibreglass more than once. However, do you really know what it is and what it's used for? If the answer is no, in this article we'll tell you in greater depth about all the possible uses of fibreglass and exactly what this material is. Keep reading!
Fibreglass is widely used for manufacturing products for industries such as cabling for telephone, Internet or television. In addition, other uses of fibreglass include the manufacture of industrial containers for storage, tanks or thermal and acoustic insulation systems. It is also used as a material for reinforcing sculptures.
What fibreglass is and its presence in the market
Fibreglass is increasingly present in the market, as well as in our daily lives, even though many people are not really aware of it.
At Feroca we offer you a wide variety of materials and products, and naturally, we also provide you with a full selection of fibreglass and reinforcement fabrics.

In more technical terms, fibreglass consists of glass filaments that are bonded together through emulsion. They come in the form of a mat or fabric.
The fibreglass we offer you at Feroca is a very high quality fibreglass.
Furthermore, in addition to all the uses we have mentioned above, which we will now explore in greater depth, fibreglass can also be combined with materials such as Polyester Resin or Epoxy Resin to obtain parts with greater tensile strength.
What are the characteristics of fibreglass?
Fibreglass is a material that has grown exponentially within the industrial sector in recent years because it presents a series of very promising characteristics. These characteristics are:
- Glass fibre is three times stronger than other materials such as steel.
- It has great natural resistance to fire.
- The use of fibreglass makes it possible to achieve a product with great dimensional stability.
- It is a material with very high durability.
- It is a good thermal insulator due to its low thermal conductivity.
- It is a dielectric permeable material.
There are different types of fibreglass available on the market and they can come in different forms such as tapes, putties or packings. However, at Feroca we offer you a full selection of fibreglass or mat so you can find the one that best suits your needs. You will be able to find fibreglass in mat format, in fabric, in chopped strand fibreglass and quadraxial glass fabric.

What are the benefits of using fibreglass?
The greatest advantages of using fibreglass are:
- Material highly versatile: fibreglass is very versatile, as it can be used to manufacture or reinforce all kinds of products such as handrails, platforms, staircases, sculptures, repairing pool cracks…
- High resistance: fibreglass is a very resistant material. It offers great resistance to both tensile forces and corrosion. That is why it is widely used in industrial projects.
For industries that carry out their work with corrosive elements, having materials as resistant as fibreglass is essential.

- Very high durability: fibreglass also has very high durability. This is not the same as resistance. That is, durability refers to the amount of time fibreglass can withstand use (or last).
This amount of time is very high, which makes fibreglass a great investment.
- Very affordable price: fibreglass is also the perfect material for your budget, as it is a very affordable product.
Uses of fibreglass
When we think of fibreglass, we think of its application in different industries. You may be interested to know some of the applications in industrial sectors that make use of the various applications of fibreglass as a highly resistant material.
The automotive sector:
- Manufacturing clutch discs and brake pads.
- Reinforcing the drive belt using an impregnated glass weave.
- The manufacture of insulation systems and awnings.
The construction sector:
- Reinforcing facades and cracks in interior walls by manufacturing fibreglass mesh fabrics.
- Creating acoustic and thermal insulation systems with fibreglass mesh fabrics.
- Decorating walls with fibreglass covering to give the room a more original touch. Furthermore, since it can be painted, it is a highly customisable material.
- Fire protection system.
The recreational sector:
- Manufacturing hockey sticks.
- Manufacturing snow skis.
- Manufacturing snowboards.
Other uses that can be given to fibreglass are:
- Manufacturing stools, lamps, plant pots, fibreglass mats, fountains and aquariums...
- Various types of fibreglass sculptures in any colour, size, shape and texture, using only this material or in combination with others.
- Reinforcement of sculptures and moulds.
How to reinforce moulds with fibreglass?
The use of fibreglass is very straightforward. For example, if you are making a mould and a silicone counter-mould and want to reinforce it, once you have made the silicone counter-mould, you simply need to apply the fibreglass, previously cut into squares, all around the counter-mould using a brush soaked in resin to achieve a much stronger and reinforced final product.
Once the resin and the counter-mould fibreglass have dried for about three hours, it is time to sand everything thoroughly, so that the fibreglass is smooth and there are no sharp points when handling the counter-mould. Once sanded, the silicone is gradually separated from the counter-mould.
Next, the mould is removed from the counter-mould and the silicone skin is separated from the original piece. This way you will achieve a very well-reinforced counter-mould that will serve you for future occasions.
