Retarder for platinum silicones. Add 1% to Part A to double working time, up to a maximum of 3%.

PlatSil Retarder 71/73 R is a specific retarder agent for platinum (addition) silicones that lets you extend working time without compromising the final properties of the mould. Essential when working with large-format pieces, complex geometries or in high-temperature conditions that speed up curing.

What it's used for

PlatSil Retarder 71/73 R is designed for situations where the standard working time of a platinum silicone is insufficient. It is especially valuable in studio work that requires precision and extra handling time.

  • Large-format moulds where pouring and degassing require more time
  • Brush or roller application of thixotropic silicones on highly detailed pieces
  • Working in warm environments where ambient temperature speeds up curing
  • Processes involving vacuum chamber degassing that consume part of the working time
  • Slow castings or those involving multiple silicone layers
  • Serial production where consistent working times are required

How to use it

  1. Prepare the amount of platinum silicone you are going to use and separate Part A into a clean container.
  2. Calculate the percentage of retarder you need: 1% to double the working time, 2% to triple it. Do not exceed 3%.
  3. Add PlatSil Retarder 71/73 R exclusively to Part A and mix thoroughly until fully homogenised.
  4. Once the retarder is integrated into Part A, add Part B in the ratio specified by the silicone manufacturer.
  5. Mix the complete silicone carefully, scraping the sides and bottom of the container, and apply or pour according to your usual process.
Important notice — Platinum silicone inhibition: Platinum (addition) silicones are sensitive to certain materials that can inhibit their cure totally or partially. Avoid contact with surfaces or materials containing sulphur (sulphur-based clays, uncured latex rubber, some cyanoacrylate adhesives, vinyl gloves, tin or lead residues). If you are unsure about the compatibility of a material, always carry out a cure test with a small amount of silicone before making the complete mould. Inhibition manifests as a sticky layer or incomplete cure on the contact surface.

Usage tips

Exact dose for each situation

The relationship between dose and working time is progressive: 1% doubles it, 2% triples it. There is no advantage in exceeding 3%, and doing so can alter the mechanical properties of the mould or cause poor curing. Always measure by weight, not by volume, for precise dosing.

Mixing order: always into Part A

It is essential to add the retarder only to Part A before incorporating Part B. Adding it afterwards or directly to the complete mix can result in uneven distribution and unpredictable working times. Thoroughly homogenise Part A with the retarder before continuing.

Temperature and actual working time

The retarder extends working time, but temperature remains the factor that influences it most. In summer or in workshops without climate control, you may need a slightly higher dose to achieve the same working margin as in cooler conditions. If you use a fast cure agent in other formulations, bear in mind that retarder and accelerator must not be combined in the same mix.

Frequently asked questions

How much retarder should I add to get more working time?

With PlatSil Retarder 71/73 R, adding 1% on Part A of your platinum silicone doubles the original working time. 2% triples it. Do not use more than 3% under any circumstances, as you could compromise the mechanical properties of the mould.

Is it compatible with any platinum silicone?

Yes, PlatSil Retarder 71/73 R is compatible with any platinum (addition) silicone. It is not suitable for tin condensation silicones, where it will not have the desired effect.

Does the retarder affect the final properties of the mould?

When used within the recommended ranges (up to 3%), the retarder does not significantly alter the mechanical properties or detail reproduction of the silicone. Exceeding the maximum dose can affect curing and mould quality.

Can I combine the retarder with other additives such as the thixotropic agent?

Yes. You can use PlatSil Retarder 71/73 R together with the thixotropic additive to gain both consistency and working time. Add the retarder to Part A first, homogenise, and then incorporate the thixotropic agent according to that product's instructions.

Does the retarder affect demoulding time?

Yes, extending the working time also extends the total cure time and therefore the demoulding time. Plan your production schedules accordingly, especially if you work with serial moulds.

Where should I add the retarder — in Part A or Part B?

Always in Part A, before mixing with Part B. Adding it at any other point can cause uneven distribution and inconsistent working time results.

Does the retarder work for tin condensation silicones?

No. PlatSil Retarder 71/73 R is formulated for platinum (addition) silicones. Tin condensation silicones have a different curing mechanism and require specific additives for that type of system.

Is there an additive to accelerate curing instead of retarding it?

Yes. If you need to shorten the cure time, you can use the Cure Agent 81 VF, which accelerates the process in a controlled manner. Bear in mind that accelerator and retarder must not be used in the same mix.
