Wax Ice Spray is a wax spray with an ice effect designed for special effects on skin and hair. It is the go-to product on film and television sets and in victim simulations whenever you need that glacial shine without complications.

What it is used for

Wax Ice Spray is designed for special effects professionals and enthusiasts who need to recreate extreme cold conditions or skin injuries in real time. The spray creates a crystallised, glassy-looking film that accurately simulates the visual effects of ice, frost or frozen skin.

  • Recreating frostbite injuries on film and television sets
  • Frost or ice effect on hair for winter scenes or dramatic effects
  • Victim simulations for emergency services, police or medical training
  • Special effects in theatre and performing arts
  • Editorial make-up and artistic photography with a winter or post-apocalyptic theme
  • Historical reenactments and cosplay conventions requiring a frozen look on skin or hair

How to use it

  1. Make sure the application area (skin or hair) is clean and dry. Remove any residue of cream or oily product that may interfere with adhesion.
  2. Shake the can well before use to homogenise the formula.
  3. Hold the spray about 15–20 cm from the area to be treated. Too short a distance causes product build-up; too long a distance dilutes the effect.
  4. Apply in short, controlled bursts. The product crystallises in seconds, so you can build up layers if you need a more intense effect.
  5. Allow each layer to crystallise before applying the next to control the final result.
  6. Once the scene or session is finished, remove the product from skin with a specific cleanser such as Telesis Silicone Remover. On hair, warm water and shampoo are sufficient.

Usage tips

Control the intensity with distance and layers

The key to a convincing effect is gradual build-up. Apply a light first layer to create the crystallised base and assess the result before adding more. If you are going for an extreme freezing effect or heavily affected skin, layer thin coats rather than applying a single thick one, which tends to clump or look unnatural.

Combine with other products for more complex effects

To recreate cold injuries with greater realism, you can combine Wax Ice Spray with Fleet Street DirtWorks matting powders applied on top to break up excessive shine in areas that should not look so crystallised. You can also use PPI Attagel as a texturising base if you need to build up areas simulating swelling before applying the spray.

Precautions on sensitive skin and delicate areas

Avoid applying directly near eyes, lips or mucous membranes. Always carry out a patch test on a small area of skin before applying to larger surfaces, especially if the actor or model has unusually sensitive skin. For removal, do not rub dry: first apply the cleanser and allow it to soften the product before gently wiping away.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to apply directly on skin?

Yes, Wax Ice Spray is formulated for application on skin and hair in special effects contexts. As with any FX make-up product, a patch test is recommended on a small area first, especially on sensitive skin. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes and lips.

How is the product removed from skin?

The most effective removal from skin is with a specific cleanser for special effects products, such as Telesis Silicone Remover. Apply it to the area, allow it to penetrate for a few seconds and remove gently. Do not try to remove the product by rubbing dry, as this may irritate the skin.

How is it removed from hair?

On hair, warm water and shampoo are sufficient. Wet the hair thoroughly before applying shampoo so the product softens and comes off easily. If there is a heavy build-up, it may be necessary to wash more than once.

How long does the effect last once applied?

The crystallised effect is stable for the duration of the scene or session. It is not a long-wear product designed to be kept on for hours: body heat, sweat and movement can progressively degrade it. For long productions, reapplication between takes may be necessary.

Can it be used on silicone or latex prosthetics?

Yes, it can be applied on silicone surfaces and on prosthetics already adhered to the skin. It is a common way to add the final glacial shine to a more elaborate special effects make-up. Always verify compatibility with the paint or encapsulant finish used on the prosthetic before applying in a visible area.

Can it be applied on fabrics or non-organic surfaces?

Although designed for skin and hair, the spray can be used selectively on fabrics, plastics or prop accessories for a visual effect that is consistent with the rest of the make-up. Bear in mind that removal from fabrics can be more laborious and is not always reversible.

How many uses does a 50 ml can provide?

It depends on the application area and the intensity of the desired effect. For spot applications on small areas of skin or hair, a 50 ml can will last for multiple sessions. If you need to cover large areas or are working on productions with many people, it is advisable to have spare cans on hand.

Is it necessary to use a base product before applying it?

It is not essential, but in more elaborate make-up effects you can use texturising or base products before applying the spray. For example, PPI Attagel allows you to create volume and texture beforehand that the spray then crystallises over, producing a more three-dimensional and convincing result.
